Subject: Skid Plates and crushed transmission pan
IP: Logged

Message:
Well I bottomed out, and the factory plastic front-suspension skid plate cracked about 3- inches in front of the rear mounting holes which allowed the skid plate to rise and "dent-in" the transmission pan. I have read some other posts about this happening and it possibly restricting flow through one of the filters. So far everything seems to be working OK. Is this a big problem, and how should I go about fixing the pan. Should I try and bend it back, or replace it? Also I have tried to locacte a new pan online and have had no luck. What does a new pan cost? I realize I will have to get fluid, filters, and a gasket.

Additionally I have the plans for new skid plates from forexfour and am looking for a place to get them fabricated. So far the quotes from the 4x4 places around Phoenix AZ are 350-400. This seems high. Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,

JH

As for the skid plates I custom built mine 1/16"
steel plate, and they have paid for them selves
30 times over. $200 CDN for the raw steel
alone, plus hours and hours of build time.
That was for front, transfer case and fuel tank
skid plates.

cannonball, why don't you get a steel skid plate off the newer daks? i have one on my '02 that came from the factory, it's like 3/8 inch steel, very tuff.

Cannonball. The filter is about 1" -1.5" from the bottom of the pan on my '99. If it's smashed up farther than that, you may have a problem. The filter/gasket kit at NAPA is only $19.95 plus the cost of 4 qts of fluid. You can probably straighten out the pan by putting it on a piece of wood and hitting it with a rubber mallet. I would probably take the safe route and remove it to check it out if I were you. $40 now could save you several hundred later if the filter is damaged.

I don't know what chad is on, but a skid plate
made of ( 3/8" ) steel would only be factory

A GERMAN TANK !!!

The factory skid plates on the 02 Daks are
hardened plastic for the front and transfer
case skid plates. The one for the fuel tank is
steel but its quite thin.

I am not sure if anyone has been able to confirm any Factory steel skid plates as of yet. The composite material has weak spots and can not handle a bottom out very well. If there are truley steel skid plates from the factory that would be great.
I know I hope the '04's have them and I hope they do not mess up the Dakota look for '04 either.

Sucks that not only your plates broke but that the crappy composite material damaged you tranny pan.

The thinner you go from 1/4" steel the more likly you will get buckeling on the longer plate. Just something to think about. I do not know how many time DJ and I are out and you hear over the radio glad I have them steel plates.

Well here are some answers I got from the dealer. Luckily the pan is pretty cheap so I will replace it this weekend. For the money they want for the skid plates they better be steel. I still think I will have the ones fabricated from forexfour's design.

Dear Justin,

Unfortunately damage incurred due to off road use or an accident is not covered by your factory warranty. The cost of a transmission oil pan is approx. $36.00, the filter, sealer and ATF4 (5 QTS) would be approx $69.00 additional. Labor to install these items would run $71.00 coming to a total of $176.00 plus tax. If you would like us to complete these repairs, please e-mail us back or contact Jerry Bark @ 602-336-1493.

Thank You
Bill Luke Dodge Service
thanks for the request.

ouch, that is not good.
looks like our service department has replied with an answer about the transmission pan.
the skid plate is another story. if you want to replace it, there has been a design change. because of that change both the front and rear skid plates need to be changed. the change has something to do with how they fit together.
those two skid plates and the hardware sells for $272.47 plus the labor.
thanks

well, i checked out my skid plate again today just to confirm and yes it's heavy gauge steel, but 2 things, i bought my truck used with 2k miles so it is possible the guy that had it before me (who was older and died of a heart attack) could have put it on, also the dealer put a lot of extras on this truck them selves, spray on "line x" bed liner, custom wheels and tires, custom bumpers, and a roll bar, so it is also possible they put it on. but either way i some how ended up with a very tuff steel skid plate. sorry for the confusion.

What price was listed on your sticker for it? I heard they were a little pricey. My skid plate package in 2000 was $160.00 for all plates and they were composites.

I hope they are putting out steel ones by now.

apon looking closer it is about 1/4", on the edges theres a thicker peice of steel welded on for extra stength i guess,so on the edges it is about 3/8" thick, and it is flat. i just assumed it was from the factory, but i belive it is an after market skid plate now, i looked at my friends '00 dak and he does have a plastic skid plate which is much differnt.

I built a set of skid plates based on fourxfours plans for my '02 quad. I made them a little wider and the transmission plate I had the sides bent up to follow the contours of the chassis frame at the rear. The material cost was $75 for my set and about two hours labor (mine) to add the bolt holes and install them.

Does anyone have the Microstation/AutoCAD drawings for the plates? I found a place here in Phoenix that will reduce the cost to make the plate by $45 if I can provide the .dxf file.

Thanks much

I have an 02 Dak that I bought new, and I will swear up down and sideways that the skid plates are Steel. I took them off to clean them after a small oil leak and believe me the longest one weighed a good 25+ lbs... and clanked on the concrete with the same sound as my wrench.

Now the gas tank skid plate is a different story....definately plastic.

Well I had some fabricated from the plans from forexfour and JJ and they weigh about 100 lbs. I had to use a jack to get the front suspension one on. So my guess is if you took it off by hand its not steel.

I have two OEM aluminum skid plates made to cover the front end of a Chevy 2001-2002 HD. They are thck and have raised areas to make them stiffer. I would say they are 3/8 of an inch thick.
