Subject: Front Differential in 93 Dak IP: Logged
Message: What style and make of front differential should be in my 1993 Dakota? Is it the Dana 35, or a 7 1/4" like a local repair shop told me. What gear ratios would be best for towing? It is a 4X4 Ext. Cab with the V6. What other modes would help?

Message: The shop told you correct, it is a 7 ¼”. There aren’t too many choices for gears. Your pretty much limited to the stock ratios 3:56 and 3:90 or if you do a lot of off-roading, you can get 4:10s through Randy’s Ring and Pinion. I would only recommend the 4:10s if you never, ever plan on driving any faster than 60mph on the highway. I have 4:10s and 33” Baja Claws on one of my Dakotas and it’s too low of a gear for a V6 with big tires. It’s awesome off road, but forget the highway. I wouldn’t go any lower than 3:90s if it’s your daily driver.
