Hey guys thought i would give you an update, since its been about three weeks. after dicking me around for 3 weeks, my insurance company decided they weren't going to cover me. So...i went out an got a loan and dropped $11,800 into the truck. I got everything, 40 gal fuel cell, with a fuel pump to the stock tank, new aluminium heavy duty 29x19x3 radiator with 2 electic fans, new fiberglass fenders and bedsides and the GTS hood from premier automotive. we're going to do a full engine and bed cage, plus all of the originally planned longtravel stuff and moving the battery to the rear, I'll have pictures of the work as we go, and completion date should be on or around the 10th.

That's too bad, but I was kind of wondering how you thought your insurance company was going to cover you. Your new setup sounds sweet. Be sure to post some pics when you're done.

hey full coverage should be full coverage. If you pay the premium you should be able to get your truck covered no matter what you do. but it doesn't work like that.

dweishar in the long run it might come out cheeper since they would have jacked your monthly rate way up.

Yeah thats gay. If you back into a tree your covered but if you jump a hill and crush the front end your not? That is just totally gay. Oh well good luck with the new installs and don't forget to send me some pics. How do those fiberglass bedsides work? Do they fit over part of the metal or wrap over the whole thing or do you have to drill the spotwelds and remove the outer metal. I wish they made just a small piece kinda like a miniature dually thing that would stick out a few inches and allow you to trim like 3-6" off each side of the wheel well.

the reason insurance won't cover u is because, your truck would have been totaled(basically if airbags go, bye bye truck)((have fun paying for those)) Second, what did u tell them? "i launched my truck and messed up??" i would hope not! i would drop u off insurance plan. To actually rebuild ur truck....would be as you showed like buying another. basically, u messed up, take it like a man, and dont do it again!! :)

Used to be that a 4wd or SUV was made for that. Last time I checked I'm being charged 300.00 extra a year because I drive a 4wd. For what? Obviously not off-roading. I driven both trucks and motorcycles for 15 years with no wrecks. I've been with the same company the whole time. I've paid a lot more in, than my truck is worth. Getting tired of all this political correct crap. It's OK for the ins co to pay for a soccer mom totalling her 4wd SUV while talking on the cell phone or putting on makeup in the mirror. They'll pay for an idiot like that, maybe even for the poor guys car she hits and totals also. Saw about 100 wrecks here, with the last snow, caused by idiots that shouldn't have a 4wd. I'm sure they were all paid for. But they won't pay for a mistake you make off road. Sounds pretty hypocritical to me. 4wd used to be recreational, now it's "cool". My .02 Jim

Couldn't agree more JimC, everyone who has 4WD is surcharged more due to the greater possibility of damage due to being off the paved roads, but if you do take it off-road they will refuse your claims for repair or drop you if they find out. Insurance is just another example of Corporate Business buying off peeps and passing laws for insurance hikes every chance they get and trying to refuse or reduce claims by using used or jap parts wherever possible. Of course, auto fraud and theft is partly to blame also, but that's another thread lol.

This is alot of immature BS. When you buy full coverage it isn't open for your interpretation of what full coverage means. It's in black and white on your friggin' policy. READ IT. How many of you who are complaining have actually read your policy??????? You don't even know what you have bought. Full coverage doesn't mean do whatever the hell you want and send the bill to the insurance company. And those of you who complain about high rates on 4wd must not understand that actuaries base the premium on the cost of claims the company pays out. Key words in that sentence are "pays out". That's what you are getting for your extra premium. It's not based on guesswork. This guy launched his truck into the air. Either he didn't understand it could damage his truck or he didn't think to maybe check his policy BEFORE he did it. And who really pays for the repairs had his insurance company covered him??? The other policy holders (read you and me), that's who. But it's nice to blame corporations (who are actually you and me) and government (who are actually you and me). They make nice scapegoats in absence of knowledge and responsibility.

Sounds like McCraken is a disgruntled Insurance Company Stockholder... Blaming all the little people around him for every insurance premium increase he has ever seen, ROFL.

All insurance premiums are not based upon actuarial data for every class of vehicle. It is true, the policy holders pay their premiums which in turn can be paid towards claims. The premium fuels the company and all it's overhead with money left for political funding of the candidate that can assist with state to state insurance laws to the benefit of the stockholders stocks, otherwise, why be in business. Fraud and auto theft certainly drive the rates higher than they could be a perfect world, that's the way it is and will always be, you will pay for the indescretion of others no matter how much you complain.

Those who are sore that they pay so much for insurance and should be able to do what they want to their vehicle and expect their insurance company to pay for it are one ladder rung away from committing fraud, sharing the ranks of auto thieves who also commit a crime costing the other policy holders increased premiums.

Of course, your driving record, claims and credit history will determine your final insurance premiums, so to save yourself money don't do stupid things that destroy or damage your vehicles with intent to have your insurance company pay for it and have good credit. One thing to remember, don't complain about your high insurance rates because there is nothing you can do about it short of the above recommendations, otherwise, by a ten-speed and enjoy gas/insurance free miles of smiles.

lol...good one river...actually I told them that I drove it into a ditch while swerving to avoid a child on an ATV off Devils' Slide Road(unimproved state road). Which isn't intirely untrue from a certain perspective (hehe) If you see the whole video, we did swerve to avoid a child on a dirt bike that shot out in front of us(a chevy was trying to get enough speed to do the jump too) but i still had a good jump angle on the landing spot, so i still went for it. The original landing spot was perfect....slight downhill and loose sand, but with the new angle it was uphill with loose sand, no truck could have survived it, and we were all very surprised it did. As for a moment of honesty...my wife and a couple of friends wanted to leave the truck out there, report it stolen and collect the 17,000 my truck is worth and call it a day, but being a little more honest than my company, i decided that i'd see if i could get the 7,500 from insurance...I didn't...no big deal. Next time i renew my policy, I'll just be sure to include off-roading as one of my coverages...lesson learned....end of story.

I don't think he went out with the intention of trashing his truck, nor do I when I go wheeling. It would be nice to know that I am protected as my policy states in the event of an accident, even off road. I think charging extra for a 4wd policy and not covering it is pretty close to fraud. As far as I'm concerned the insurance companies are only "one ladder rung away" from the HMOs. Charge the max amount possible, provide the minimum service necessary and challenge every claim. Charging extra for political funding sounds a little like fraud to me also.

I agree that if you pay for full coverage that you should be covered regardless of offroading or not. Most people don't got out with the intentions of trashing theyre vehicles but it happens. Accidentally carelessness or just plain immature BS, whatever. And yeah there are a few dishonest people who trash vehicles for the ins money and yes of course we (you and me) are gonna pay in the end. That's just the way it is and the way it will always be. And I aggree with Jim C about fraud. Fraud happens everyday in some shape form or fashion but what can ya do?

Insurance policies don't cover off-road activities. Period. Read your policies, full coverage or not.

There may be some carriers out there that will cover off-road, but unless you specifically ask for it, you won't get nor should you assume that it does...read your policies!

You guys are going back and forth arguing about policies and whether or not the insurance company should cover it...read your policy, end of argument.

I think many people view it from this perspective.
They spend x amount of money per month and never make a claim for 20 years. When they need to make a claim, they have some obscure law or "policy" that means they don't have to cover the incident. so now they start questioning why they've been paying the ins.co. this money in the first place and can only realize that it is required.
So, for example, I've been paying over $90 per month for 17 years. I'm paying more now, so, for the sake of arguement, let's figure $100 per month for 20 years.
That's $24000. If my claim is only for $2400, that should leave my account a surplus of over $20000. So why do they feel they have to increase my rates as a result of this claim if there is still so much in my account?
Because they don't work that way. You pay them their money which they use to pay their salaries (which are a LOT higher than mine), their operating costs, and that 18 year-old moron who ran over the soccer mom and her 10 kids with his brand new jacked up SUV. That leaves nothing for when I might have an innocent little fender bender, so they have to milk me for MORE money to cover that!
Are insurance companies evil? No. They are a necessary protection in a law-suit happy culture. They are also good for those times when something happens that you didn't forsee.
Are they good? No. Or they wouldn't be milking you every chance they get (NYS just allowed State Farm to raise their rates again).

insurance Companies need to re-think their business model so they aren't screwing the people who pay them. After all, they can't remain a gov't sponsored monopoly forever.

Hey Dweishaar. I wrecked my truck and insurance wouldn't pay for it, so I just made the parts myself. It cost me way less than $11,000. The only problem I've encountered is that the cab tends to warp when it rains (I guess I should have used treated plywood). If you want the plans, I can draw them up with a crayon and mail them to you. If you go to my profile, you can take a look at me loading the parts up to take them home. All kidding aside, I'm glad you'll have your Dak back on(and off) the road soon.
