Subject: 4-wheeling in WNY? IP: Logged
Message: Anyone know of a good location to go off-roading in Western NY?
I just got this '02 Dak and would like to get it dirty.
BTW - Is it ok to go mudding or off-roading with stock tires?

Message: If your talking toward Buffalo area, I heard there is some good spots around there, my cousin lives outside of Buffalo and I can ask him.
On the stock GY's, you'll get stuck for sure running them in anything larger than a mud puddle. The tires were engineered to excel at ride quality with minimal road noise on dry roads, every other area(rain, mud, snow) they are just plain dangerous IMO and I have owned three 4x4 Daks since 1999 that came the GY's stock which all promptly were replaced with much better tires. The car-type lug pattern clogs solid with mud and snow effectively giving you slicks.
GY makes mostly good tires for trucks, they should just have made this tire a little less passanger car-like. If you do try'em out, just bring a tow strap and another 4x4 just in case and Good-luck!
Flowmaster cat back w/15 inch chrome tip, Volant Intake, Poweraid TB Spacer, Splitfire Plugs, full synthetic fluids 3 inch body/1.5 inch Block Lift, 305 70-16 X-Terrains on AR Terons, Pro Comp ES9000's Grizzly double/single rollbar with (6) Hella's, Manik Nerfs, Line-X, Hard Work & $$$$$$$$$$

Message: Yeah, Buffalo/Rochester area.
Just checked, and I'm running the GY 265/70 R16
I'll be looking for replacements soon as the fronts have only about 10k miles left.
Cooper replacements run ~$104 each, but I guess these will also be passenger rated.
What's a good tire to replace these with that combine moderate off-road ability with highway ride-ability (retaining some semblance of MPG)?

Message: Hey dragon, i'm from rochester, NY. Check out this website:
www.mudnuts.org
That is Rochester's local off-road club and i am a member of it. You'll see my truck somewhere in there under the name of Chaximus. We do trail rides nearly every weekend in various locations throughout western ny. Most of the rides are legal and the land owners give us permission to use. I am the only dakota owner there, and of course, the only 2wd so i'll be very excited if we get another dak in there :) Let me know what ya think.

Message: Couldn't find your truck on the site, but it looks like a lot of fun. I'm gonna check it out a bit more at work tomorrow (hopefully it's gonna be quiet).
What kind of Dak?
I'm in a 2002 QC v-8 4.7 auto 4x4
I read your requirements for the trail rides and the front tow points might be a bit of a problem. Seems Dodge didn't make it easy to add hooks to the front of this model Dak. But I'm gonna see what I can do.

Message: Yeah they are having problems with members and their pictures so that's why mine ain't in the website. The tow hooks up front aren't a requirement, but a recommendation. I went on a few rides without front hooks. Not a problem.
I'm running a 2000 dako 4x2....look around the board and u'd see my pix somewhere. Or just check out www.rit.edu/~cmh7456/4x2andfriends/dakota/tires

Message: That is one sweet looking truck!
What size tires are those? Looks like you've added a lift kit to it.
I'm already looking to replace the stock Wranglers as the front only has ~10k left on 'em.
My Dak looks almost exactly like this one: http://www.dodgedakota.net/albums/viewer/236.htm Except mine hasn't got the hard-tonneau yet.
My own pictures will be posted as soon as I replace the batteries in my digital.
Looks like they're talkin' about a ride to a members house for some mudding. How long does that usually last? I work til 3:30pm on Sundays.
