Message: My 97 has a 3.55 LSD, I want to change it out with a 3.90 for added power in the low end, especially when pulling my boat (about 4000lbs). What ratio is the front end currently and what should I go to? Some have said to find a junker and take both diffs for a swap out...but I want to know the ratio of the front as well.
I want to ringandpinion.com and it will only change the rpm from 2150 to 2320 at 80mph....sweet!!!!

Message: Your front gears are always the same as your rear ones. If they weren't you wouldn't be able to put it in 4 wheel drive and move very far. If you change the rear, you have to change the front. I have 3.55's and plan to go to the 3.92's. I'm going to go ahead and get the factory ones and have the dealership do it. I have priced almost every ring and pinion shop imaginable, and the closest anyone could match me was a 3.92 for the rear and a 3.91 for the front. This would work but I just want to go ahead and get the factory ones. Is a bit more expencive than after market but if there's a problem, at least the factory will cover it under warranty.

Message: 3.55 is the ratio that dodge puts in the 2001 Dak 4.7 with A/Trans with the Heavy Duty Tow Package. While it is true that a 3.9 ratio would improve your towing a little it would not be a wise choice with increaseing fuel costs. I would wait until gas prices come down a little after summer is over and look into 4.10 ratio gears. This would be a much more significant increase in mechanical advantage.

Message: My friend has the exact same truck as mine and has the 3.92's. His mileage is almost the same as mine. Only a couple of hundred rpm higher on the highway. Also on the 4x4's they only have 1 suspension package and that is the heavy duty one. This is from Dodge corporate offices after a few phone conversations with them on some other issues. Mind you ours are 2000's. Not sure if things stayed the same or not for 2001. 3.55's and 3.92's came on the 2000 4x4's.

Message: Steve, 3.08 is pretty tall for towing for any kind of tow vehicle. Could be tough on transmission even with a cooler. Go with smallest diameter tires you can use. That can help some.
