Subject: 3.91, or 4.10, or 4.56??? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 99 dak 4x4, 5.2 auto, with 3.55 gears and stock size 31" tires. I mostly drive the freeway (60-90mph) and I was thinking about getting some lower gears for some more low end power and acceleration. With the 3.55s I cruse at 70mph, just under 2000rpm. If I did get lower gears, how would this affect Milage and power. I do not care about top speed it is already fast enough for a 4x4.

Message: I wouldnt go any lower than 3.92. If you go lower than that your truck will suffer at higher speeds. It will have power to go faster but the gear ratio stops it from going any faster.

Message: I'd go with the 4.10. 4.56 gears with 31 inch tires would be too low for me. You're looking at about 200 RPM higher at 70 mph with the 3.91's, and just under 300 more RPM at 70 with the 4.10's. 4.56's would give almost 500 more RPM at 70...that's quite a jump.
I changed mine to 3.92's in April (from 3.55's; no 4.10's available for 2000 and newer front diffs) and I really like the difference. The truck feels much more responsive and the transmission doesn't hunt for the right gear going up hills. The damage to gas mileage has been negligible...maybe 1-2 mpg at speeds of 70+, and no change below that.
Hope that helps.

Message: I'd go with 3.92s if you're staying with the 31s. I've got 4.10s for my 33s and plan to go to 35s without changing.
