How do you like them?
What don't you like about them?
I appriciate any feedback.
I am looking at having either one installed on the rear. The rearend shop recommends the Detroit lockers but I can find more info on the power trax. I hear Detroit is the way to go.

Message: I got the powertrax in my rear. I would recommend this locker over detroit if your truck is ur daily driver. With the powertrax, i hardly notice the locker is there, and it rarely chirps and hops on turns. Only when i put it in reverse and turn at an angle, there's a jolt which means it's locking. Off road....well...it's the best :) Locks when u need it, even before u need it, and will get u through the toughest spots easily. Only negative side about it that i can think of is that it tears up my yard :( I park in the grass and when i back up at an agle, the tires tear up the grass cuz both are turning at the same speed, unlike open diffs. Overall, it's a great economical locker for daily driving trucks. Haven't tested it in the snow yet but will very soon.

Message: Chaximus,
I did allot of research and I agree with what you say. Now hearing someone who has them back up the power trax just confirms.
I found a very informative site that compares all of the different lockers.
Power Trax does seem to have a type of lsd tech for turns to limit or prevent chirping, Although its actual performance seems to be in question.
I will schedule the install and go with it.
Thanks for your input!

Message: chaximus which power trax do you have? I have the lock right and I am very happy with it's performance. I have only come across one 4x4 that can out do me in the mud.
the noslip is more expensive but it is smotther in operation. my lockright is by no means rogh in my opinion but I have had others tell me it is kinda rough. I can hear my tires being rough on the road though it's kind of like when you drive a atv on the road. and I can tell my back tires are wearing faster then my front tires.
all in all I would definately get one on another vehicle though and I would deffinately do it again if I had to do it over.

Message: UWGriz,
Thanks for the link but that will not work with LSD, it has to be an open diff. This seems to be another questionable area for our Dakota's.
For those that have the Power Trax no slip do you have a 9.25 axel or a 8.25? Do you have LSD or open end?
More research has pointed to the Detroit being the better No slip lockers and Power Trax is a fine option as well. Research shows that the Power Trax is more likely to fail sooner. But I think either way you can't go wrong just spend more money.

Message: For clarification can anyone straighten me out here???
I think I am now more confused then when I started.
Open end differantial, is this a LSD?
I called three shops to order Power Trax for my truck, they all say they do not make one for the 8.25 axel with lsd.
OK, Then UWGriz post this info so I call Power Trax. They say no it wont work on 8.25 axel with lsd.
I already have the Detroit locker coming since it seems that I do not have the knowledge to know what I am talking about. I read up on the axel in the Dakota Service manual and I thought I cleared up my questions. Now I am back at not understanding exaclty what I have and what I need.
BORN2STEEL21,
You say you are waiting for a lsd carrier and gears, you have a 99, what Axel type?
Although I already have the Detroit Locker on the way and I am staying with that, Can anyone unconfuse me here?

Message: An open differential is not the same as limited slip (lsd). I looked and you're right it looks like they only make one for the open diffs so yes, your option is the Detroit unless you want to swap to an open diff. But now I'm confused. Born2steel21, if you don't currently have the lsd carrier, aren't you all set to install the locker (once you get the gears)?

Message: mine was 9.25 open.
lsd and open are different. and open axle sends power to the spinning wheel. and lsd directs about 20% of power to the wheel with traction.
a locker gives a perfect 50/50 distribution between both wheels.

Message: Chris and everyone else,
I think you guys are a little mixed up so i will put in my 2 cents. I am by no means saying you all are wrong and i'm right, but in the research i have done over the past few months this is what i have learned...
You CAN'T have LSD AND a locker unless...
a. you actually buy one of the very expensive lockers that allow LSD like the new Jeep Rubicon.
b. the ARB or OX locker might allow some LSD application.
The simple facts of the matter are you cant have your cake and eat it too. These are your options...
a. open diff with no locker or LSD
b. LSD
c. Locker with no LSD
d. Super hi-tech units that cost an arm and leg to have both...again, like the Dana 44's in Jeep Rubicons.
So sorry guys, no LSD and Locker together. You aren't crazy Chris, you can't have the LSD 8.25 axle with a locker, but you can have the 8.25 with a locker and no LSD.

Message: OK, i have the 8.25 axle and they do supply the no slip for that axle (obviously) and it runs like a normal stock axle. I am running the no slip right now and i can't say anything bad about it since it's completely hidden. My rear tires are not wearing down as much as the front (turning) so i can say the locker does not affect tire wear. I was told by the company that the no slip improves gas mileage and also improves tire wear. I'm not totally sure about LSD and and no slip, but i hear alot that you can't have both.

Message: That is what was so confusing Arthur.
By the way Missed you at Hollister Sorry youcould not make it. Pismo Thanksgiving???
Anyway if you look at the Power Trax link I posted for the 9.25 Axel options for the NO SLIP lockers. The bottom one is for a LSD 9.25 axel. This is where the confusion started.
I do not have the 9.25 axel(thought I did till I checked) I have the 8.25 so I thought it would be a simple matter just ask for the 8.25 lsd no slip Power Trax lockers. No such thing. You can only get the No Slip locker for the open differential on the 8.25 axel.
So what is the difference in how you can have a No slip for a 9.25 axel lsd but not a 8.25 axel.
So when I absorbed all of this I was totally lost. I never thought that you would have LSD and No slip together, I just got confused. I am still not quit understanding the Power Trax deal but I do know that I can't go wrong with the Detroit No Slip Locker for strength and durability and that is what it is all about.
I really have learned allot about these lockers and can not wait to get them on and put them to the test.
Thanks for the input! Pismo 11-28 - 29.

Message: Lots of people pretty much have to order LSD as part of a package when ordering certain options. So, you're sort of stuck with it, whether u want LSD or not. The cones in them will wear out with time however, like brake pads do, making them quite useless after a few years. When that happens, why not replace the axle with a normal open diff (or even gut the limited-slip part from the factory axle, if possible) and put the locker in then?
