I inherited a 96 Dakota club cab from my father that had been wrecked and repaired. When you switch to 4wd it makes a metal on metal sound when you turn right or left. All of the drive train has been checked by a mechanic. You cannot hear the sound from the outside and it goes away if you remove the rear drive shaft. Anyone have any ideas or have you experienced any such problems?

Only thing I can think of is perhaps.... the CV-Joint is binding.. under stress.

But that's like a REALLY!! long shot even if it was binding to make that noise.

check your transmission mounts. The rubber cushion between the crossmember and the tranny tnd to corrode leaving slop in the mounts. The 15/16 nuts on the mounts will need to be heated and cooled once or twice to counter act the thread locking compound on the bolts.I hope this helps.

It could very well be your front drive axles , commonly reffered to as CV joints. Is the metel on metal noise a clicking that gets faster the faster you go?If so, its safe to say you need to have your joints rebuilt , or purchase new/rebuilt ones.a chain store such as VIP, Autozone, and NAPA are your cheapest alternatives, going to the dealership will cost you twice as much. Again, good luck.

The CV joints have been checked by an experienced mechanic and also the noise disappears if you remove the rear drive shaft. The noise is constant irrespective of speed.
