Subject: Bigger Tires vs. Performance and mileage IP: Logged
Message: i was wondering how those bigger tires affect yor mileage. does your motor work harder or does it make things easier. I know it can go both ways i have a 99 5.2 v8. whats the biggest u can go with stock 4x4 suspension. What do u think i really should do, my budget isnt that big to go all out. But i dont want to do some thing stupid either

Message: With your V8 your not going to feel much performance loss at all...I got a V6 and I didn't lose to much but then again I didn't have much to start with. I lost about a mpg in fuel economy. If you want to keep your stock suspension you'll need to go with a 3" body lift to run 33's and even then you'll probably have to crank your torsion bars a little bit. If your not into lifting it you can get the Hanson bumper for the front and I believe you can run 33's stock.

Message: Ive noticed a slight off the line power loss, but thats about all. the gas mileage is crappy anyway and noticed no difference when i switched from 31s to 33s. the RPms stayed the same at 65 MPH

Message: I have noticed with the larger tires tha I am not on the gas as much. It seems that I coast more or just do not have to give to much gas once I get up to speed. I am doing a spreadsheet of mileage with 31's and with 33's. I need some more info but it seems like the 33's I get a little better mileage.
I am thinking of posting the mileage results to see what you guys think of the calculations to mileage relationship.

Your truck is looking sweet man. Right on. What type of gears do you have in that truck? If stock ones how does it drive? Gas mileage...etc.
thanks, Bill

Message: When I switched from 31's to 32's I lost about 4 mpg with my v8 when cruising down the highway. I use to get 16 mpg and now I get 12 mpg. Doesn't make sence to me. I kind of wonder if there is some other reason for gas milage loss.

Message: Anytime the dealer does work on my truck I check everything they do. I have had them gap plugs wrong and I have always had another problem arise not to far after it was in for service.
Since I have changed to a local recommeded Mech I have not had any problems with any service for the last year.
Maybe it is just a coincidence.

Message: To anyone that thinks their gas milage has gone down , you have to remember, if your speedos off by 10-15-20% (or whatever it may be due to the bigger tires) your milage will look worse than it really is.
With those bigger tires ,you are actually going MORE miles than your odometer is recording ...or if you go by the overhead computer the same applies.
When I put my 33s on my computer says I`m now getting 10.3 MPG , compared to 12-13 before the tires and lift , the thing is I go the same route everyday , and stop for gas the same amt. of time I did before. I`m sure it effects the milage some , but not as much as you may think.

Message: If you lift your truck and put on larger tires remember your gearing and your altitude. I have a 4.7L with 3.55 gears. When i put on 33's I noticed a big power loss. Had I been at sea level the loss would still have been manageable, but I wouldnt be in 4th gear TRYING to gor 80mph!! See my point, re-gear then get larger tires, unless you live at sea level.
Slow heavy 4wd 2002 CC 4.7L I need 35's and 4.10 gearing

Message: ForexFour and Scott,
I would be interested in your calculations. If you need help collecting data from my experience let me know. I just put on the Goodyear MT/R's 285/75-16 ~33" and computer reads about 10 mpg. I do notice that the truck does do a lot of downshifting making me think my gas mileage really is kinda worse. No lift. Just cranked bars and Hanson Bumper.
