ELF Claims Responsibility For Torched Forest Service Research Facility
The Earth Liberation Front (ELF) has claimed responsibility for an August 11 fire that caused $700,000 worth of damage to a U.S. Forest Service (USFS) research office in Irvine, Warren County.
ELF sent an e-mail to the Warren Times Observer last Sunday night saying it had targeted the 40-year-old federal Forest Sciences Laboratory building in response to timber sales, oil drilling and “greed-driven manipulation of nature” in the Allegheny National Forest.
The e-mail, sent 2 days after new roof trusses were raised on the damaged building, said the group would destroy the facility if rebuilt, and said all other USFS buildings nationwide “should now be considered likely targets.”
No one was injured in the fire, but ELF’s eight-paragraph e-mail said that might not be the case in the future.
“While innocent life will never be harmed in any action we undertake,” the e-mail said, “where it’s necessary, we’ll no longer hesitate to pick up the gun to implement justice, and provide the needed protection for our planet that decades of legal battles, pleading, protest and economic sabotage have failed to achieve.”
The e-mail was signed “Pacific E.L.F,” and is a new clue in the investigation of the fire by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the FBI, the Pennsylvania State Police and the USFS.
Daniel Boeh, of the ATF, says a $5,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible. A hotline manned by ATF agents 24 hours a day has been set up at (888) 283-3473.

We have had problems with that organization out here in Indiana. They drove metal spikes into trees so that they wouldn't be cut down. They also set fire to logging equipment and spray painted their logo on the bull dozers. Whackos, plain and simple.
