Subject: 4X4 Shifting??? IP: Logged
Message: Ok, Im a Newbie to all this 4X4 and Offroading stuff. But is it normal for the truck to make a big clunk noise when u shift it into 4hi or 4lo?? I followed the instructions and was rolling at about 5mph and shifted into neutral then shifted into 4lo and i heard it make a big clunk noise... scared me for a second. I thought i had broken something.
If im doing it ALL wrong, what is a good way to shift into 4X4 with an Auto Trans??
oh, i have a 2000 Dak with the Floor Mounted shifter.

Message: 4lo, be in neutral. it throws it into a lower gear and raises your RPMS. on my 91, it says be in neutral for 4lo. 4hi is shift on the fly at no more than 25mph, and you shouldnt drive much more than 35 in 4hi. only reason for that fast is if youre in the snowy mountain trails or on the switchbacks.also! in 4lo, you cant do much more than 10-15mph. it is that low of a gear. it is 2.73, i believe for the transfer case, which is low. itll shift thru all the gears fast, as the engine and tranny are working faster and harder. when shifting out of 4lo, same deal. real stump pulling power!

Message: When you shift into 4hi you can go as fast as 55mph and have no problems. No goinhg into low range I stop the truck put the trans into neutral then put into low and into drive no noise. I personly dont like the hole rolling thing. Its easier to get into low while rolling but if you are stopped it wont clunk.

Message: I have to shut my truck off to shift into 4 wheel low. If I don't, it grinds and clunks rather loudly...almost to the point of where it sounds like the transfer case is falling to the ground.
My manual states that you can shift from 2 wheel to 4 wheel high up to 55mph. Never had to do it yet, but nice to know that you can if you need too.
