I have the factory skid plates on my 2000 CC 4x4 and they proved to be very durable. I got the whole front end of the truck stuck on a rock that was hidden beneath the dirt. It was only hitting about 3 sq. inches of the skid plate while both wheels were off the ground. No cracks or breaks, just scratches.

Have you seen the factory skid plates, skoorb?

I've got 'em on my truck and they look plenty strong. Based on Albert's experience it looks like they perform pretty good.

I have the skid plate. The trick with my experience 4x4ing is to not get into situations that need to use the skid plate. It is there more or less for if you do need it. The mojority of punishement it will see is small rocks flying up on a gravel road. It is plenty strong for that.

Mine looked plastic (2001). Also, so you have to remove the front one to drain the oil?

I have the skid plates on my 2001 CC and they're not very strong at all, I've alreadly cracked the one protecting the transfer case. I was 2-wheeling on some mountain and came to a small peak which I thought I'd easily clear, nope. Put it in 4Lo and pulled out but nearly ripped one of my skid plates off. These plates shouldn't just crack right down the middle, expecially with Dakota's transfer case dipping down so much. I'm def glad I did have them though, rather brake the skid plate than my transfer case.
