Subject: What is the max the stock 4x4 setup can take? IP: Logged
Message: What is the max that the stock 4x4 setup (tranny, axles, and T-case) take in the way of HP, TQ, and tire size? I am unsure whether I will get the 4.7 or 5.9. I dont off road hard but drive aggressively on road,
Thanks

Message: A LOT. Thats why I bought mine. With the V-8 nothing stands in my way, not even the Toyotas I pull out of the mud. Hell my stock shocks kept until a week ago.

Message: These trucks are using the same driveline components, ie trans, engine and some axles that are coming out of the full size Rams. I have logged over 200000 miles on 3 dakotas and the only problem I have ever had was waterpumps and Chrysler Batteries. I would buy the 5.9L just because it is older tech and cheaper to modify with an existing parts line. The 4.7L is powerful but I just don't think it has the balls or longevity of a tried and true 5.9L. I too drive very aggressively on the road and even harder offroad everyday, I am in construction, and the truck has held up well. Only a few minor creaks and moans now on a truck that gets twisted up pretty hard everyday.
To answer you question about what it can take, look at back issues of 4 wheel and off road. There is a durango with 38's and stock driveline. It is the 5.5" lift I have heard bad things about so that would be the weak point of the truck. I also know of R/T owners with over 400hp on the 5.9 and supercharger and nothing breaking but some are blowing head gaskets which is solved by o-ringing or the aluminum R/T heads that recently came out. Basically you sound like you are looking for a smaller truck with some balls and the Dakota is the only one that exists. Forget the Chevy ZR2's and whatever ford has these days because they just don't have the power, strength or the room/Size that the Dak offers. I bought my QC for less than the price of a new Sporttrac 2wd so Dak's are also bargains.
Just my $0.02.
