Subject: Bad Luck with V8 5.9l 2001 Quad Cab IP: Logged
Message: Has anybody had the bad luck that I have had with their 4x4 Dakota? I have barely had the truck 1 yr and it has been into the shop 3 times with problems concerning the transmission. The first time was for the torque converter and it was in the shop 3 days. The second was for what they said was a malfunctioning chip caused by low tire pressure? For those of us that do serious off roading you must let out the tire pressure at times ...especially in the sand. Now I was driving and the "check engine light" came on. I was just told it was a faulty wire in the transmission. All these problems involving the transmission. Now I am afraid to go offraoding. I would hate to have the new vehicle break down in the middle of the Arizona or California deserts where I like to go. It has been a great vehicle other than that for camping and desert ratting but the reliablity is now in question?

Message: I haven't had any problems with mine.
<---- knocks heavily on wood
I air down to 6 lbs in the rear and 7 lbs in the front and haven't had any malfunction related to air pressure...lmao....that does sound like a far fetched excuse for a problem alright.

Message: I have my service summaries here. The 1st time my truck broke down was for the torque converter. Never break down in Gallup NM! The second time was for recall 975 (reprogram transfer case module). I will qoute the next: "Found tire were low pressures according to service manu this will cause trans to stuck in 4th gear-however found pcm is due for update-update pcm to latest software". When I picked up the vehicle that time the service guys said not to drive the truck below the tire pressure that the manual says! I agree with Blizzard that sometimes you have to go to 8 psi in some situations. I asked the service technician about that and he said "NO don't run the vehicle wit that low of a tire pressure"! Anybody else heard this or was he blowing smoke up my arse? Then yesterday it was in again because the check engine light was on.

Message: Some car models now have a warning light system for low tire pressure. There is no air pressure guage going into the tire itself, and the low pressure is detected through the way some of the sensors in the drivetrain report information to the computer.
So, you can probably detect when tire pressure is real low in the Daks, using various sensors in the drivetrain (I couldn't say exactly which ones). If the programming in the EFI uses this sensor data as input for something, then you certainly could have the 'check engine' light go on due to low tire pressure.
Now, exactly what they meant by a 'malfunctioning chip' is something else again. Maybe that's what they really thought, or maybe it was just their 'dumbed-down' explanation to you so that they didn't have to go through the whole 9 yards on how the EFI was programmed, or maybe even the warning flags in the computer program are set up to show some generic error message (and turns on the check engine light) when it detects that you have low tire pressures (although this would be just bad programming practise).
But, I have no doubt the playing with tire pressures could have a big enough effect on the sensor information going into the computer to cause a 'check engine' light to go on.

Message: Any low tire pressure sensors that I have ever heard of were inside the tire , connected to the wheel , and it monitered the tire pressure.
As far as I know , that`s the only way to do it.
I don`t know how a sensor anywhere else on the veh. could tell you your tire pressure.
