Subject: QC Fuel Tank Skid Plates, What to do??? IP: Logged
Message: After reading many of the posts regarding the composite skid plates that are now being sold by Dodge, I opted to have my two front ones custom made and now have from the front suspension to and including the transfer case covered in stainless. (I know someone, ... :) )
Anyhow, for the fuel tank it was hard to come up with a practical design so I decided to look into Dodge and found that the one offered for the fuel tank in the accessories books isn't designed for the Quad Cab because of the difference in fuel tank size with the other models as I'm sure many on this board have already found out. For all who are interested in what I've found out on the matter, it's a case of Good News, Bad News. Ready Now???
Good News :) , ... There IS a fuel tank skid plate available for the Quad Cab. It IS steel too! It is part number 52102426AB.
Bad News :( , ... Unlike the $68 accessory offering in the books for the other models, it's almost $300 for the thing as it's sold as a part and NOT an accessory. (My dealer apologized immensely over the price and offered free installation should I go for it in an effort to help offset the cost.)
As is stands now, I haven't spent any money and
don't know where to go from here. Any ideas anyone??? Thanks in advance!!!

Message: I was just thinking about this same thing. I was under my truck the other day and I noticed that my fuel tank was lower then my frame rail. I thought to myself thanks Dodge for building me such a well designed 4x4 with nothing to protect the underside. I am going to use 1/4 thick aluminum for the plates. Aluminum is easy to work and cheap.I am makeing tow hooks from parts from the H2 Hummer.

Message: That's a huge ripoff in that your tank is 2 gallons bigger than stock, big deal. I would go to a dealer with a tape measure and check out a truck on the lot with the smaller tank and the plate and take some measurements. Maybe you can alter the stock plate to fit your application.

Message: The craziest thing about this whole Quad cab fule tank skid plate is that Dodge has a composite one that covers the tank very well and I think would work better that the 2 other plates. It looks like it mounts better and will hold to the abuse.
Have any of you guys seen this composite plate?
My buddies '02 quad has them but you can not find anyone with dodge who knows anything about these. Where they come from or anything! WTF is that all about!?
I am covered with my '00 in steel and everytime me and Dj go out we always at some point say sure is great knowing that we are protected by steel.
Plus they do not gather all of the extra weight in mud or sand like the composites do.
1 last good thing about the steel is since it is only 1/4" thick, you get better air flow up under your engine and tranny for cooling unlike the composites. Oh and if you get mud all in the plates like we do it takes seconds to spray it clear. Compsites can carry allot of weight in mud build up!
But the ? remains the same, Where do you find the composite, priced right, Fuel tank plate for the Quad cab!? They have to have them somewhere!
$300.00 Geez!

Message: I'm still getting over the sticker shock of the price of the Quad Cab fuel tank skid plate.
Per one of the suggestions above, I'll be going to the dealer this weekend to see if I can slide under with a tape measure. If it is really close is size, then at $68, I go for it and chance modifying the plate to a larger size.
I WILL keep you posted what develops.
Thanks again for all the helpful input guys.

Message: Let me see if I got this right: Dodge sells the Dakota QC with a composite fuel tank skid plate and yet they don't sell it at the dealers? My 2001 came with composite throughout. They may not be the best for hard core 4wheeling, but it is better than nothing.

Message: Chris,
I believe that the answer is YEP! Try to ask you rlocal dealer for a replacement for your fuel tank plate. I do not think they will be able to help you or if they do you will get the wrong one.
