I was just wondering how some of these trucks with the rancho lifts and TC lifts ride compared to stock. i know tires are an issue on ride too, but would you be ok with flying down the interstate at 90 with a 5.5 susp. and 3 in. body lift on 35's?

I wouldn't be okay with you flying by me on 8.5" of lift and 35s! ;)

If I were you, I wouldn't do it. Probably 75 or 80 max, I doubt 35" tires were designed to spin that fast and if something were to get in front of you where you'd have to stop or turn quickly, your chances of an accident are much higher.

I'm sure the truck could do it, but like Knobby says, speed only breaks stuff faster.

My 99 CC rode at least as good as stock , maybe even a little better IMO , and I had the 5.5 TC and 3in body lift on 38 Swamper Radials. I took many trips to Daytona and Orlando (each approx. 80-90 miles away cruising at 90+ and never once felt uneasy about my truck...just other drivers. And before someone slams me for being an unsafe driver , you have to go atleast 80 just to keep up with the flow of traffic.
One more thing I liked was that you can see much farther ahead of you in a big truck , so you normally can see trouble before your in it.

I just noticed you have a 2000 Dakota , so you won`t have to worry about the TC lift, it doesn`t fit 00and up Daks. , and rancho doesn`t have one that fits yet either...sorry your in the same boat that most of us are.

Ill chime in on this with a thumbs up as well. Had a 98 CC 4x4 5.9(yes a 5.9) sitting on the TC 5.5 and 3in of body riding on 36in SuperSwampers. Rode just fine. Took it on several trips from central MS to Destin,FL with no ride problems.

Oh, and that Had part, destroyed the front diff playing on cars. We've ripped out the IFS crud and are in the process of bolting up some 2-1/2 ton axles with 44's. :)

I to have the 5.5" Tuff Country and the 3" body lift. And I think its great.

It handles surprisingly well and I have had it going pretty fast a few times. I havent had a chance to go on any trips of a great distance but from where I have gone I love it.

Scott-Did you ever take yours offroad when you had it? 38s seem rather large for going offroad. Also where did you get your gears from?

Hero-How much is all that costing you? When I get enough money i want to do a swap.

Email me with all the info if possible.

If you could afford extra tires, or kept older ones. Would any of you have concerns with a lift that big and racing the truck.

Kind of like drive to the track with 35" put on the stock 31's while there. Do a little racing. Put the 35's back on and drive home? Best of both worlds go fast legally and still be able to play in moab. Granted there are all sorts of issues besides tires, that play into this. But as a general thought what do you think?

FortWorth4X4,
No , I never really did much 4wheeling with it , I built it for looks. I`ve always had big trucks and use to go play in the stinky FL mud we have here , but that gets old quick when you have a nice ride to clean up afterwards.
Also, it`s been a couple of years , and I don`t remember where I bought the gears from. I know that I ordered them from one of the off road mags. and they were percision(sp) gears (4.56s).

FortWorth4x4 ..

Your e-mail address isn't showing up correctly. We started a club down here in D/FW and I'm always looking for some more 4x4's to come out. If you shoot me your e-mail address I can add you to the list if you'd like.

Oh yea.. Why would you want to go 90+ w/ 8.5" of lift? Isn't the point of lifting your truck to clear larger tires and go off-roading? I haven't seen many people break 40 while off-road why would you want to do 90? ;-)

Knobby,
No offence, but most people only have one vehicle to drive daily. Mine (and yours) is (was) a Dakota. My previous Dak. was lifted and if I needed to go somewhere , then thats what I drove.
You would be getting run off the highway if you tried to go the speed limit (or below!). I know there are some who only build their trucks for one reason or another , but most are just expressing their own likes.
Some might say taking a 30$K truck with 5grand or more in it off-road is crazy...thats what old beaters are for. To each his own I guess. I`m not sure when this new truck of mine will ever be lifted anyway...so it doesn`t matter to me anymore anyway.

Once again , I`m not intending to PO anyone , I`m just saying if someone wants to build a truck(big or lowered) it`s up to that person as to how they drive it.

Knobby,
Ok 90+ might be a bit exagerated, but i just meant normal highway speeds. I don't think we need any more idiots out there doing 90 in anything, let alone a lifted truck. I'm just asking about ride quality up to highway speeds in a daily driven truck.

Anybody out there have anything other than a Dakota thats lifted with an opinion? I'm in the Kansas City area and there's lots of nice pickups running around with big lifts and tires.

One day, hopefully my pickup will grow up to be a big boy too.

nabobz - I've ridden in a F-350 Dualy w/ 12" of suspension lift and 38's on it.. That thing road like a Cadillac.. I've also ridden in a F-250 w/ 11" of lift on 38's and THAT!!! was quite frightning felt like we were going to flip at every turn. Seriously going 10 mph around turns felt to fast.

It all depends on what lift you put on it and what suspension components you use. If you use high quality stuff and you gear it toward road driving it'll ride fine on the road. If you gear it towards off-roading it'll ride like crap on the road.

Ft. Worth4x4,

The cost has not been cheap. Parts around 6 grand when it is all said and done. Here is a basic break down:
Axles 2500
44in rubber 1300
wheels 400
springs 800
driveshafts 300

Will it be worth it, oh yea! And it looks like we are about 3 weeks out from completion.

Hero
