Me too !

I'd like to know the Pro's and Con's of a 3"
body lift (other than the obvious) . . .
Specifically, how much does a 3" lift raise my
center of gravity ?
I really enjoy the fact that my truck is a "truck
with sports car like characteristics" ... i.e., how much does the lift effect your handling on twisty pavement ???

Best ON ROAD AND OFF ROAD (BOTH) performing tire
is the Pirelli Scorpion (my biased opinion ...
I did research a lot before deciding on the Pirellis over the BFGs, Goodyears, Yokohamas,
Dunlops, Bridgestones, etc, etc, etc ....)
Haven't had the Pirellis in deep mud yet, but
they are awesome in rocky, sandy, snow, ice, and
dry tarmac !

My opinon on the scorpions is that they suck. They look pretty cool, But I don't think they wore well for an AT tire. They do not grip worth a crap on wet pavement. I actually slid through an intersection when it was raining cause the tires didn't grip. I never tried them in deep mud cause I was not confindent about the tires. I have some Goodyear Warngler MT/R's on order. I hear they are suppose to be pretty good. I believe they are the #1 selling off road tire right now. They're on backorder cause they can't make enough.

As for center of Gravity? Well...I ddint notice it that much..if any. Ill still Wheel on some steep angles with out and worry of tipping.

On Road I guess it was SLIGHTLY noticable...but I have 33" tires on as well..

everyone that has put on on their dakotas have seemed to like them, i dunno how much offroading they do but they are great for looks, when i had mine on my ranger the spacers didn't hold up too long...i didn't do heavy offroading but some...
although i'm still going to get on for my dak because i'm impatient for the suspension lift and when the rancho finally does come out it's not going to be high enough.....

CONS!!!

YOU WILL NOTICE THE FRAME IT IS VERY UGLY.
The handling of the truck is a little less stable than factory.

Pros 175 bucks and bigger tires.

Hey Joey,
Who's got the lifted quad on your website? It's at: http://www.geocities.com/jsanz11_dakota/black_quad.jpg

Do you have any specifics on this one?

Thanks,
YJ

P.S. Nice truck. I like the grill guard. Is that a WAAG? What does that stand for? ; )

Pros:

3" allows for 33" tires = 1" more ground clearance for frame and suspension.

Larger & wider tires = better grip in all off-road situations.

Makes for bigger truck so better penis extension. ; )

Cons -

Frame shows, some don't like the look.

Most the truck stays in the same place, so not as much ground clearance under cab as with suspension lifted trucks. For example, under the cab of Knobbymans truck, there is about 6" of lift higher than stock, but only 1" on body lifted trucks(cause only the tires raise the frame). But under the front suspension and rear axle, the clearance is the same(cause they both fit 33's).

Oh, and questions for Knobbyman...is your truck fixed now? I only ask cause i want to know if I can start being jealous of it. : )

i don't remember where i got that picture
those pictures are usually pictures i just stumble across off
but check out these 2 website i have of lifted black dakotas
http://www.geocities.com/quad2nv/
&
http://members.cox.net/tallquad/
All three trucks are 2WD
I know for a fact that they all have 3 inch suspension fabtech with a 3 inch body on top of that making it even to any of you all that havea 4x4 with a 3 inch body
and i know the rim sizes are 15x10
when i talked to the guy that sent me that pic he told me there was lots of trimming involved
just ask hawkeye he has a green quad cab with 15x10's also i believe and i heard he had to do some trimming to avoid tire rubbing
hawks web address is
http://johnammons.tripod.com/home.html
he has a simple 3 inch PA body lift exactly like A319Driver does....
http://www.freebeer4u.com/QuadPics.htm
his truck same as hawks just kept factory 16x8 inch rims, he says no rubbing at all on his truck and no trimming was done.....
all in all all these 2wds and 4wds they are all the same height, the tires and rim sizes just give them a different look.....

a 3 inch body lift is great for the money! if the frame bugs you get nerf bars, and there are other trucks out there with frames sticking out that dont even have a body lifts on them.i have had body lifts on all my trucks since 1984,some i made myself.if most of your driving is on the street, and you want bigger tires you cant go wrong with a body lift! just my op

Ahh Dakotamaxx... figured you were from this site (you signed my guestbook with the ? about whether I was going to install a bodylift :)

UPS delivered the bodylift yesterday. I spent an hour reading the instructions a few times to know what I was up against. Will probably get started on it Sunday and work on it after work next week till complete. Here's my outlook:

PROs for me:
increased approach and departure angles
ability to run a little bigger tire
less likely to drag the rocker panels over rocks (frame should hit way before the body)

CONs:
Frame shows... hell, it'll show just as much as a stock Chevy!
Not supposed to tow with the rear bumper.

? for those that tow with a reciever hitch. I saw in Summit Racing catalog that they have a "hidden" hitch avail for our trucks. After a body lift is installed, the normal reciever hitches have this big gap (3" to be exact LOL) between the receiver and the bumper. I wonder if the hidden hitch that is supposed to be installed with a roll pan would mount the hitch so it us just below the bumper on a a dak with a 3" body lift?? i.e., making it look just like stock.

I think the body lift is fine for some, but if you want to do it right, get the goods and save for a suspension lift. I am saving for one and it should go on by christmas. I talked to our local shop and I found out that RCD suspensions plan to come out with a lift for the Dakotas by next year. I am holding out for one. I have a friend who has a 6 inch one on his 02 Avalanche and it is the best suspension I have ever witnessed. The bilstien shocks are the real deal on lifted trucks. I cant waite to see the lift on my 97 Flame red v8 dak. I have custom exhaust, pheonix gold amps, alpine navigation/DVD, K&N etc. I love this truck it has treated me right.

A susp lift would be great.....except for a few things.
There is not a reliable lift made yet for 2000 + Daks. The ones that are being made are WAY too expensive. Personally, the fact that there are trucks with 6 inches of susp lift running 33's with a little rubbing, at a cost of $1400 + for the lift, doesnt seem to justify it when I can run, and do, 33's with a 3 inch $190 body lift with little to no rubbing. Doesnt seem cost efficient to me. We are strictly talking Daks here.

As for the frame, no flame, but those that think the frame shows must have never seen a body lifted chevy or Toyota. A body lifted Dak has about the same amount of frame showing as a stock chevy truck. Looks normal to me.

Torque,

I have the 3" body lift on my truck, installed it weekend before last. I also have the stock hitch. The bolt hole for the hitch is 2" higher than the bumper so I raised it 2", bolted it into place, and then drilled the new holes for the other 2 holes for the bumper mounts. The bumper 1" lower than stock isn't noticable at all. And the hitch being 2" below the bumper looks fine also, it actually looks like a stock chevy hitch.
And yes the bumper isn't supposed to be used for towing any more but for $120 you can get a frame mounted hitch. I never tow from my bumper anyway I don't trust them at all. The hidden hitch is a good idea if it doesn't interfere with your bumper or spare but like I said earlier it really isn't noticable

Yes you can. But, if you use the relocation brackets for the rear bumper, which to my understanding is for the 2000 + kits, then the rear bumper isnt rated toq qith anymore. You would need to use a receiver hitch. Best to use a receiver anyway.

Hawkeye, that's what I meant to say... I wouldn't really call the frame showing a CON, because after a Dak is body lifted, it shows about the same (maybe even less) as a stock Chevy. Chevy's with body lifts are ridiculous looking. On some, you can actually see light between the top of the frame and the body... I wonder if they make a full truck length gap guard for those :)

Once mine's on, I'm going to make a trip to the home depot and work up some gap guards, then onward to the pipe shop to have them move the exhaust pipe up where it should be exiting and put on a nice chrome tip.

What's the difference anyway? It can't be that noticeable. There is a Chebby in a town about 20 min from me.(Muncie home of the Ball State Cardinals) It has a 3" body lift and I could stick my arm between the bed and the frame. It's terrible.

In no way am I made of money , but , if I`m spending 25-30K on a new truck , I`m going for the already made-ready-to-install ones for the extra 45 bucks. You also have to keep in mind what your time is worth to you while you`re trying to fab up some guards from a roll of plastic edging.Don`t get me wrong, I love to work on my vehicles , but in the end I don`t think you would be that far ahead of the game and may end up with some ugly guards in the end.
