Message: Personally, I dont care for straight axles at all. If its crawling over rocks that's your passion, go with it. But everything else, including racing, is usually done with IFS. My Dakota is a 1989 4x4 and I have the same clearance as straight axles and can do the same things they can. I also have a more comfortable ride and can usually get through the terrain faster than they do. Any professional desert racing ogranization uses IFS on their trucks...
...and if anyone knows anything about offroading, I think they do! Crawling over rocks doesnt excite me at all....boooooorrrrrrriiiinnnnngggg!

Message: The coil over suspension was $3500 and they use a jeep axle from a late wagoneer .. Dana 44
The Coil over shocks are King Off road shocks .. totally adjustable with a wrench... my truck is lifted 13.5 inches... if I want to go higher.. all I have to do is turn the adjustable screws on the shock and can give me up to 5 more inches in the front .. the rear is lifted with blocks..
if you want leafs it would be considerably cheaper but your suspension is not adjustable...
with an adjustable suspension you are done .. dont have to spend huge amounts of money to lift the vehicle.. just need blocks for the back.. so if you plan on keeping the truck then is a wise investment.

Message: I am working on a soild axle conversion on my 89 dak i used a lot of factory full size parts front and rear axles and a 71 383 i used the front spring hanger from the front axle of a full size truck and the rear leaf springs i took shackle and all from the rear and turned it over and took the front spring hanger and used it on the rear of the springs welded to the dak frame and built drop hangers for the front and i am still working on the cross over steering. But the front axle only worked for me cause i used a old model 727 and a 241 t case just changed the out put shaft from a small block 727 to my big block tranny case. And i am going to run 38.5 15.50 boggers and should be fine if i keep my foot out of it. My truck had a 3.9 throttle body motor stock and 3 inch body lift and 33 12.50 wild cats and i broke cv's about twice a month thats what started my swap. to use a dakota case look for a ford front dana 44 or a dana 30 from a jeep cheroke i have put a dana 30 in a dak with the fourlink and all from a jeep but 35's push the limits of that axle. I will try to get some pics up soon hope this helps.
