Subject: fuel pump question! IP: Logged
Message: Hi Everyone.I have a 2001 QC 5.9 L ,I use for work. I tow a 6' x 10' enclosed trailor, with 53,000 miles on truck ,45,000 miles on trailor. My oil pressure is low at idle but high at cruising 55-60 mph. Lately, My dak has been hard to start. 3 tries , then starts .My Question is , Does the PCM read oil pressure at start up And controlls fuel pump operation at start up.I have tested fuel pressure 51 psi key on engine off ,fuel pump on for 3sec then off by its self! leak down to 0 PSI - 30 seconds .key off ,key on 0 pressure ,no pump! I Am going to replace timing chain soon becuse of milage / towing . Should I replace oil pump at same time ? sorry for the long post. Thanks Larry

Message: Larry, I've encountered that prob on a few Daks and Durangos with either 5.2's or 5.9's, and found that the oil pickup screen was just about plugged solid with sludge, in every case!
Some Dak owners on this site have reported that changing over to a pure syntheitic oil will eventually break down the sludge build-up after a few oil changes.
That being said, I've been running synthetic oils in all my vehicles since the mid-80's, and I swear by them.

Message: The KRC timing mod gave me a bit more low end torque, and was well worth, IMHO. Just be sure to drop down to a 180 degree thermostat, and install a set of Autolite 3923 plugs, to keep you from pinging.
The Transgo kit was also a worthwhile investment, as it made the shifts crisper, reduced slippage, etc.

Message: If the fuel pump leaks down it will cause hard start pronlems because it takes time to bring the fuel pressure up. You need the fuel pressure regulator/filter on the top of the fuel pump.

Message: Thanks CW,Is the regulator separate,or a one piece unit ? fuelpump/reg/filter ,price? After I change my timing chain ,I will go back to the fuel pump if the starting problem continues. Thanks Larry

Message: CW, Do It Right, I need to wipe my glasses before I read a post!
The aforementioned oil pump/screen prob was on trucks belonging to people who complained of an issue regarding "oil pressure being low or almost non-existant at idle."
I checked the oil pressure on these vehicles with a mechanical guage, to verify that their dash mounted electric guages were accurate, and saw that they did have unreasonably low oil pressure.
Further investigation revealed that they weren't big on routine maintenance, and as a result, said engines were packed with sludge.
