Subject: Hot 4.7!!! IP: Logged
Message: Well I moved my wife and my stuff from Washington to Calif this past weeekend. And if you know anything about the 100+ Degree temps in Northern Calif. Well I was towing a Uhaul Trailer(truck and trailer = 10200 lbs per the scale). What I am getting at is I took my clutch fan off months ago and had no problems. Well climbing for 8 miles in Southern Oregon and Northern Calif made the old 4.7 get pretty warm, never hit the red, and never had the warning light come on, but it was up there. Had to run in 2nd pulling about 3000-4000 RPM going like 45 or so. Just to let those know who pulled there fans, if your towing you might want to put it back on for the tow. I know this is a unique situation with the weight and the temp out side. Just FYI

Message: I worked in Redding for Caltrans for a couple of years and now live in Chico.
It gets hot as all-get-out 112F (Redding) 110F (Chico) that's why I hesitate to remove my clutch fan or go to 180 degree T-stat (I don't know if this is good or bad but I don't like messing with my radiator in triple digit heat).
Add an up-hill and winey drive on I-5 through the Siskiyou Mountains and overheating is a distinct possibility. If your pulling a trailer in the future you might want to consider Fall of Spring. Working for Caltrans we always were reacting to snow related "big-rig" truck roll-overs in winter and many overheated vehicles causing lane closures in the summer.
However, as of 8/27, we noticed it was starting to cool down, it was only 102F today.
Glad you made it back to Redding without incident.
I also put in a post regarding sway bars about 3 weeks ago while driving on wined rural roads in Northern Ca. I'm sure you know some of the nastiest and winediest roads in Ca, 299 West to the coast from Redding and 36 West from Red Bluff to Hwy 101.
There fun if your hauling ass by yourself but passengers usually get car sick.
