I got my Black Magic 150 electric fan yesterday Im going to install it in a few days. I left Bernd a post in the main performance forum to see if he had any tips on installing it, I looked at the directions last night it looks pretty easy to do.Has anybody else installed one of these?

Thanks

I got the fan installed yesterday all so put on a new water pump. It wasn't bad to do at all I had to mount the fan side ways to get it flush against the radiator. I can't believe how much quieter it is under the hood now.
It feels like there is a little more power too. I want it to run only when the key is on but I didn't know what to hook it up to? It has two wires to hook to positive one is for high amp and one is for the ignition. I have them both hooked up to the battery right now. Have any ideas?

Thanks
Bob

Bob, I wish I could help you with the hookup, but I cant. I was wondering where you got your fan and how much you paid(if you dont mind me asking)? Was the power and reduced noise under the hood worth the time and money? And one Last thing, How difficult was it to install(how long did it take)? Sorry about all the questions! Thanks for the help!

Thanks Tex, I found a place on my fuse box to hook it up to. I got it from Summit Racing for $187. It was worth the money. It wasn't hard to hook up at all, the only problem I had was the two + wires one to the battery and the other to a + when the key is on. wasn't sure if the ignition wire had to be high amp. But some one told me it didn't need to be. But its been working great even brought up my gas mileage.

Bob, I would like to know how you mounted your Black Magic sideways...I had to attach mine with the little straps through the radiator. I just added a Flex-a-Lite #110 as a pusher to the front to assist the BM and it works great. Just hookup the wires as the instructions say and you will be fine.

I got the wires hooked up a while back I wasn't sure if both the positive wires had to be high amp but they don't. I took the radiator loose then I mounted the brackets to the side of the radiator the passenger side there was pleanty of room to hook up to the drivers side not as much material to hook it up to I got to sheet metal screws in the dront of the radiator it holding up great.

Bob, just thought you would like to know..
My BM fan developed a problem..the a/c relay in the control box failed..meaning my fan would not kick on when I turned on my a/c. I called Flex-a-lite and they were great, sending me another with no questions asked. The next day, I hooked up a manual switch so that I could turn on the fan when I had the a/c on until the new relay appeared. I drove about 8 miles to meet my son for lunch and as I pulled into the parking lot, smoke began to billow out from under my dash, (where I had the new switch). It seems that when the thermostat kicked on the fan, (I was not running the a/c), it sent current BACK through my new switch! and nearly started a fire. I reached under my dash and pulled the wires to the switch, luckily before they caught fire, did kinda burn my hand. I got it back home after lunch, called Flex-a-lite and they are sending me a whole new control box and asked me to return the old one. I removed the fan and control box and it was fried..something failed on the mini circuit board inside. I put my clutch fan back on until the new board comes. If your a/relay fails, do not run the fan...however, they said this was the first failure they had heard of in one of these fans. Though I was bummed it happened, Flex-a-lite was super helpful and I will get it all put back when the new box gets here. I asked if hooking up the new fan might have been my problem, and they said that it should not have been and that I hooked it up they way they would have recommended. I will hook my additional fan back up to the BM, but I will use a relay between them next time with inline fuses all over the place.

I've never got a clear answer about this, so I thought maybe I'd give it another shot here. I live in Wisconsin and the summers can get pretty hot and humid. I like the idea of taking my clutch fan off to free up some horsepower. I noticed that there is a factory installed electic fan installed. Can I take my clutch fan off without having to deal with any overheating issue?

Give it a try, just stay near your house and start with a day that is not "summer" hot..see how it goes. I hear some guys do that on their 4.7 engines so I would think you would be okay on your 3.9

Good luck,

Rascal sorry to hear that you had problems with yours thanks for letting me know. I have the low amp line hooked in to my heater blower motor fuse. Im going to put a inline fuse on the other line too. Its good to know that Flex-a-lite didn't give you any troubles.

I have taken my fan off of my 4.7 with no problems. Make sure you put in a 180 degree t-stat,~$10. My gauge moves when idling in traffic, but cools down fine when driving. Havent taken it over 80 dgrees yet though.

California and today it was about 75/80 f. I'll watch it close for a while if it starts to run on the hot side I will let you know.

Thanks Bob -- The weather here in Wisconsin is only in the 50's and 60's right now, so I don't think it'd be an accurate test for me to try. If anything, I'll wait until we get the 80 and 90 degree weather.

Hey Mighty, just be aware that your electric fan may only operate when you have your a/c on...if you are cruising around on a nice day without your clutch fan, and stop in traffic, it may overheat unless you turn on the a/c to get the electric fan going to cool things down...hope that makes sense.

Just wanted to let you know I had to take off my 150 fan it was not cooling enough when I was pulling my boat this summer. If your not towing with your truck it will probably be all right to use. I went back to the stock fan and its doing fine.
