Message: Good call, Ken. This board does need more threads.
Who takes what when they go off road??? You know, for that unexpected trail fix.
I always carry a fairly complete tool kit with a set of standard and metric sockets, screw drivers, torx drivers, a variety of wrenches, duct tape, zip-ties, utility knife, hammer, pliers, tire repair kit, flashlight, extra lug nuts, valve stem cores, spare lamps for the headlights and taillights, fuses (and fusable links -- I learned a hard lesson about these), first aid supplies, and the list goes on. Figured I could take on any almost any problem and get the truck somewhat drivable.
Well, last weekend I "relocated" my exhaust about 6" farther back than it should have been, and the one thing I needed wasn't in the tool bag -- tie wire, a.k.a. bailing wire! Thought I was too sophisticated for that old stuff. So, I just drove real slow, made it back to pavement, went straight to the nearest hardware store and wired the exhaust back on. Hey, it got me home. now I've got one more thing to add to my tool kit.

Message: Don't go too much anymore. I have an '84 CJ7 that I used to go 'wheelin' in. Used to take a tool box filled with what you described. We have some bodacious mud holes down in the Pine Barrens here in Jersey. The Jeep has a Warn 8000 lb. winch on the front bumper and I used to bolt a high-lift jack to the rear frame crossmember. I pulled many a F250 out with that winch, thank God for snatch blocks, LOL. I remember one time I had three trucks chained to my Jeep trying to pull one truck out buried to the framerails! I also had a tow bar under the back seat that was used on occasion.

Message: FYI Black.. if you ever burry your Dakota up past the frame it takes at least a 4x4 Surburbin with 4 BIG guys in it go pull you out. Least that's what it took for me.

Message: Wow! K-man you must have been gittin' it to bury it that deep!
Thanks for the advice but I've kinda mellowed out in my old age. But just in case, I'm thinking about that portable Warn and installing a front receiver hitch. Or I could probably rig up a piece of channel to work with my High-lift and the receiver hitches. Probably the most I'll do is take it on the beach surf fishing. Doesn't hurt to be prepared though, just in case.

I hooked the tow strap to his frame right under his extended cab part hooked a strap to my frame w/ my Hi-Lift and I pulled him towards me :( His truck was moving ... well Sideways (man if only I could do that when I'm trying to parallel park).

Message: My off-road "kit" includes much of the same. One thing that I really haven't heard is an axe. Living here in CO, it is mandatory to have an axe & shovel when "stomping" through any of the National Parks or recreation areas. With luck, I will be replacing the factory air box with an on-board air compressor (following the Shaker hood installation). The extent of the kit really depends on how deep into the back woods I go. My extended kit includes a tent, sleeping bag, Coleman lantern & stove, etc. (gotta LOVE the Quad Cabs storage room!!!).
I know all too well about pulling "other" vehicles. Last year, I racked up a 5:1 ratio for my winch (5 of them, once for myself). The best one was a 4x2 F150 sitting on a set of 35" tires. He was stuck on a narrow portion of the trail at the bottom of a water & mud-filled ravine. After winching him up & outta the hole, I proceeeded to scoot over to the side of the trail to let him get passed me. And then, after helping me get my winch cable rolled back in, he had the displeasure of watching me drive through the same mud-hole that had stranded him. bwahahhaha 8^)
A little rant about said F150 driver: Okay, first off, who in their right mind tries to hit moderately rated trails (two of my trail guides rate it a 7 of 10) in a 4x2?!? The only thing the guy had going for him was the suspension lift that allowed him to put 35" tires under his truck and a limited slip rear diff!! Not only that, but the knucklehead didn't have the sense to bring ANYTHING with him....no rope, no hi-lift/handyman jack, no tire chains, no shovel...*sheesh*
I've also got some good photos of my first "stuck" this past September...the only time I've used my winch to save myself. I'll post on the off-road board when I get those photos added back to the website.

Message: I have been fortunate so far. Only had mine stuck twice. Both were when pulling a fullsize rig that was stuck and sitting on the axles. One was a 4x2 at the beach. Dug myself in trying to pull him. Unhooked, a few quick swipes in front of my tires with my folding shovel, and I drove right out on my own. Second, was a 4x4 with a non working front end, buried in the mud and sitting on the rear axle. Dug myself down with him too. Soon as I unhooked from him though, I drove right out. Guess those dont really count as stuck though. More like temporarily detained.

Knobbyman, you're saying you can't see them even if you copy and paste the addresses above? That's the only way now that I can get them to come up.
I tried doing a HTML hyperlink to the addys and in the preview window I get "access forbidden on this server". Like below:

Message: Those are some great pics, BlackDak02! My first new vehicle was a Garnet 1984 CJ7. It had a 6cyl with a 5spd. I never got around to buying the hard top and hard doors for it though. Man was it cold in there during the winter months! did some offroading on some jeep trails with a buddy who had a toyota landcruiser. never got stuck.

Yeah, that's an '84 also. 258, 5-speed, 4.11's, locker in back rear w/solid axle conversion, full roll cage, front&rear axle trusses, warn 8000lb winch, con-ferr roof rack, 25 gal fuel cell, 3in body & suspension lift. Was gonna put a small-block chevy in it but I put a Weber carb on the six and it was like I put a new motor in it- unreal! Went through some wicked $hit in that Jeep.

Knobby, it is strange that the other links don't work. I set them up as public photos, mystery to me.
