Subject: 4x4 question?

Message:
is there power to all 4 wheels when my Dakota is in 4 wheel drive, High or Low? Or is there only power to one wheel in front and one in the rear, until it slips, then power shifts to the other wheel? Just curious!

If you have open rears then one front wheel and one rear wheel will spin. If you have a limited slip in the back axle then you should have three wheels providing traction under load.

I got stuck pretty bad in a snowbank today. My fault, wasn't watching how far back I was going. It was an awful feeling; I was on solid snow and then the back end just dropped. Lots of digging! I have the 3:55 limited slip, but was only getting power to 1 front wheel and 1 back one? Think there something wrong with the rearend?? All I can say about my goof is Thank God there was another dak with me. :-)

Either you need to change the fluid in the rear (don't forget the L/S additive) or you need new clutches in the posi unit.

Hopefully all you have to do is change the fluid and put in a shot of the additive.

A quick test to see if your L/S rear is working is take a bottle jack and jack up one side of the rear just a hair off the ground and try to drive it off the jack, if you can't something's wrong. You saw it wasn't working in the snow so you already know it isn't working properly.
