We just got some snow up here in Jersey. I went out last night to see how the Dak handles in the snow. I was kind of leery when I first saw the little electrical 4WD selector switch when test-driving the Dak at the dealer in the first place. Well I went up to a friend's house to do some snowmobiling and when I was leaving his long farm driveway in 2WD I got into a couple of big fishtails. When the truck straightened out I went to throw it into 4Hi and in the dark I kinda went past it and into 4Lo for a second I think. I know it takes awhile for the transfer case to actually engage but it kinda scared the s#it outta me. I think this setup they have sucks,IMHO. You can unwittingly put your truck into 4Lo going down the road at 40 mph and drop your transfer case out in the street. I think they should have a totally separate switch for 4Lo with a lock-out on it like big trucks have for locking in the tandems.

I don't know maybe I'm old-fashioned, I would have speced locking hubs on my truck if I could have, LOL.

Are you sure it will actually engage? To my understanding, with the electronic shift, it wont actually shift into 4 low unless it reads that you have the tranny in neutral. I could be wrong. Seems like it would be set this way to prevent an accident like what happened to you.

I think your right Hawkeye, the software that controls the electronic transfer case has a built in "fail safe". I think you have to be stopped or in neutral or both for 4low to engage. The little indicator light next to each setting will blink if it is not engaged for the setting you have chosen.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up, Hawk & 2TX. I kinda was hoping it was set up that way. My old chevy had an auto in it but had the 4WD shifter on the floor and you had to be in neutral to shift that into 4Lo. Its kinda scary though that you can physically move the switch over there.

I know it won't shift into 4Low unless your in neutral.. Trust me.. Guy I work w/ decided I needed to be in 4 wheel drive while on the dry freeway.. Going 60 it didn't engague. That was 4high. When I took my truck to the shop to get the belt squeaking fixed I test drove a new '02 and tried shifting to 4low while going 30 drove all the way around the block *Texas sized block* and parked it was still thinking about shifting into 4 low.

Apprecieate the help, CW & K-man.

Good to know it's been put through a rigorous test like that K-man! I've been down there, some of those "Texas sized blocks" are the size of Rhode Island, LOL. Now that's what I'd call an intelligent transfer case, it does a lot of thinking.
