Subject: slow filling gas tank IP: Logged
Message: Just got a 2002 Dakota 4x4 club cab. A good improvment over my old 10 year old truck. I do have one problem. Whereever I go to fill the gas tank, it has to be filled slowly, I cannot get the pumps to go fast enough to set the little metal lever allowing the pump to run without being held. Trying to get the pump to go faster, just trips off the pump as if it were full. I currently use a little block of wood with a bolt in it to try and pump gas hands free.
I talked to a co-worker who has a Dakota 4x4 similar to mine but three years older, he has the same problem. Is it backpressure? Odd gas tank neck agle?

Message: Scuba. Welcome to the site! I have a '99 and never have had this problem. I would check to see if your vent hose is pinched somewhere. If it's not pinched, it may be plugged with dirt or something. By the way, you may want to change your user group to GenIII.

Message: Another option if you just got the truck is to take it to the dealer and let them mess with it ;-)
The gas pump might just be putting the gas in to quickly. I only had the problem once. I've never gone back to that station again.. And haven't had the problem since.
Just a idea though.

Message: I know the problem you are talking about. It is a preasure issue.
You need to change the angle of the nozzle once it is in your tank. place the nozzle in and lock it on at full blast, after it stops pull it out about an inch and let it rest at a different angle.
this should work better, works for me.

Message: And if that doesn't work before you go to the dealer try looking at the upper hose when you look up at the plumbing under the well and see if it it's pinched or clogged. other than that I't very could be the evap tank.

Message: If you buy gas from the same station, you might try another station. Could be pressure sensor at the pump.

Message: Or you're jamming it to far in, try backing up a bit. I had an old, old Porsche that it took the exact spot to let the modern fuel nozzles flow. Again, just talking out of my you know what.
clean&shiny is good, mud&dirt is better

Pull the nozzle out as far as you can allowing to rest in the filler neck and let it fly. Like BlackBeauty said, if you jam it in...he he...it will cause back pressure and pop.
In New England, most of the states don't have the auto-filling tabs, so you have to either hold it or prop the cover in the handle. It's a real pain in the #ss.
