Okay, so back on March 20th I was wrapping up several days worth of research for the cheapest possible prices for a set of Westin Platinum Series, lifetime warranted, chrome-plated stainless steel step/nerf bars. Out of stupid curiosity, I hit up 4 Wheel Parts' website to see if they had a price listing for my application (2K QC).
As usual, I hit up there web site and ended up paging through this & that...just seeing what all they had. Well, before long I found myself in their Special Offers section, and that is when it happened.
I found that they had Hobrecht lifetime warranted, chrome-plated stainless steel step/nerf bars for 2000+ Dakota Quad Cabs on Over-stock Clearance. To make things even sweeter, they were offering free shipping through the end of the week. But the kicker was that the Hobrecht's were about $130 cheaper than the cheapest price I'd found for the Westin's--$220 vs. $355.
Without further ado, I promptly dropped a set into my shopping cart & happily perused through the rest of their web site....picking up an Optima Red Top & the remote system for my Rancho RS9000 shocks.
Well, 4 Wheel Parts delayed shipment of my entire order because the step bars went on backorder. After two weeks, I finally get an e-mail with a tracking number...woohoo...or so I thought. Turns out it was just the battery & remote.
Now today, I get an e-mail stating that my step bars have been put on backorder for another week!!
So how in the fetch does a part that is on "overstock clearance" go on backorder for a month?!?! How in the hell does that work?!? If its overstocked, you should have them coming out of your flipping ears!! The proverbial, "I can't give them away fast enough."

Don't get me wrong, I'm not flaming 4 Wheel Parts. They have done right by me on numerous other occassions. It's just that I want my parts, and have wanted them for a month now!!
*sigh*
All right, I feel a little better...thanks for listening. 8^)

Well, hey Halo; at least you're a Marine. When you get upset I'm sure you can find a way to shoot a few guys to ease your anger. Me, I have to go play in the water, being a sailor and all. :)

I got an Ingersoll-Rand impact wrench on backorder from Harbor Freight since New Years'. Same deal ridiculously low price, probably waiting for me to cancel. Screw 'em, I fixed my old gun I'll wait 'em out. I have a form letter E-mail that I send 'em every other week to let 'em know I'm still interested and dissapointed in their service.

Wow, that is a good price. I did a quick web scan for the nerf bars and the cheapest I found was $342.60, and no shortage of websites so I can't believe *all* the sites I looked at would be backordered. Wonder if that was a webpage screw up with the wrong price, and like the previous post hope you will cancel. Like they say, if it seems to good to be true.......

I'm bored and apparently in Ralph Nader mood so I did a little searching on Hobrecht. I was going to call the company and ask about "backorders". Apparently they used to be in Huntington Beach, CA (714)893-8561 or (714)375-0500, but the numbers are no longer in service. I found the numbers in a post dated 1999. They also have no website, and no listing in CA at all. Hmm, maybe they went out of business and didn't tell anyone. That would explain the backorder hahaha. I am guessing another company bought the company and is manufacturing step bars under the Hobrecht name. Seems odd they would just disappear. Oh well, killed a few minutes anyway.

That is kind of odd. Bottom line is that I originally chose the Westin's because of their lifetime warranty, but figured if the Hobrecht's were that much cheaper, I might as well.
Just poked my head back into 4 Wheel Parts, and I see that they now have an entire section devoted to Hobrecht: http://www.4wheelparts.com/product1.asp?imclass=HOB&cat=TUB
Also see that the same bars are up about $80 from what I bought them at. That makes me a little happier.

The company I work for supplies stainless tubing to Westin, GoRhino, Luverne Truck, Technical Tubes, etc. all who make step bars. I'll ask the sales rep about Hobrecht and see what she knows about them.

BlackDak02: I ordered a 3/8" & 1/2" torque wrench from Harbor Freight about a month ago. Same deal, they were on sale, so I figured I really ought to pick some up & quit using the torque guess-timation on bolts. Needless to say, I am still waiting for them. Kinda wish I'd had them yesterday afternoon while I was installing my PowerSlots & Raybestos QS pads.

Got some info. Hobrecht (The Fat Man Company) 12220A Rivera Road, Whittier, CA 90606 P:562-696-7899, F: 562-696-8069.
The guys name is Al Hobrecht and they do not manfacture anything. He buys the stuff (most likely off-shore, foreign) and sells already manufactured.
Did a reverse lookup on those phone numbers with no results. Whatever this guy does, he doesn't want to be found easily thats for sure. No wonder no one can get parts, they can't get ahold of him!

hmmmmm...interesting....
Wonder how this is going to go?!? On the bright side, I bought the bars through 4 Wheel Parts. So, if something does fail, I can always get my money back from them.

Back on April 6th, I sent an order status query into 4-Wheel parts & got the response, "WE ARE RECEIVING THE PARTS IN ON 4/11/02. WE WILL HAVE THIS OUT TO YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. 4 WHEEL PARTS"
I figured two weeks was plenty long enough for them to get shipped to me...hell, they probably could've been Pony Expressed in that amount of time. So, I gave them a buzz, and after the guy called the manufacturer, I was told that they'd be on back-order for at least another 3 weeks!
Hmmmm...let's see.
Order placed March 20th.
Checked status April 6th, and was told they'd ship on the 11th.
Now we are out to April 24th...and looking at a minimum of 3 more weeks.
Order cancelled.
Westin Platinum Series have been ordered and confirmed to be in stock. ETA: next week.
*sheesh* I hate waiting.... 8^)

heh....glad to hear you got your impact!! Thankfully, my buddy, the UPS man, brought them a last Thursday (a week ago). Now if the weather would stay nice over this weekend, I could go "test" them out!

Well, my Westin Platinum Series nerf bars came in Thursday. So I took a little drive over to 4-Wheel Parts Friday morning, and performed the install Friday afternoon. Only bad thing is that Westin accidentally put two driver's side front mounting brackets in the kit. They still went on, but that means I'll have to call them & get the passenger side one sent out.
One step closer......now where is that ellusive suspension lift?!? 8^)
