Subject: 98' Rear end noise solution IP: Logged
Message: I had a problem with a noise coming from the rear end of my dakota....it would start when cruising around. as soon as i took my foot off the gas pedal, the whirring noise began and wouldnt stop until gave it a little gas...i read a lot of posts on here about shotty rear ends and eaten up pinions-some of that stuff is expensive to fix. I checked the U joints and they were shot. so i replaced them each for 14 dollars from oreilly. the pieces had grease certs, unlike the stock pieces, and were warrantied for life. I put everything back togather and the noise was completely gone. all i could hear was the exhaust and the tires on the road.
on another note, for those who have a posi rear axle-
I checked out the fluid in the transfer case and it was done for-cheap transfer case fluid wont last- so i replaced it with some high-performance 80wt90 fluid(recommended by manufacturer.) the truck runs so smooth its amazing, and the new lube keeps the rear end cool.
hope i helped some of you guys out there with the same problem.
