Subject: 1996 5.2L Mil Codes IP: Logged
Message: I have an odd set of problems. I just got a new exhaust system installed on the truck. Full 14 guage, welded from the Y-pipe back, with new Cat. and Magnaflow muffler. I also had both O2 sensors replaced.
I'm now getting 4 sequential O2 (code 21) sensor errors codes. Can anyone help shed some light on this? I've been told I have to wait for the PCM to re-learn, but it's been over 2 weeks and they haven't cleared yet.
I also have an odd code. Instead of the normal code 55 and the end of the code reading, I'm getting 56. Anyone else had this code, and/or know what the difference is?
I'm taking the truck back in this week to the shop to have the codes re-read by the machine, then clear the codes. I'm going to guess the codes are going to come back, so my next step is to do a PCM reset, but hesitant to do so.
The truck runs great, and idles well, but I have noticed some reduced mileage. I have been in 4x4 a fair amount lately due to the weather, so I know that will affect my mileage, but not to this extent.

Message: You said you 'had' both 02 sensors replaced. Why?
From your description, you got a 'cat back' and replaced tthe 02 sensors at the same time.
Put the old ones back on and see if it throws a code.
Resetting the PCM is a no brainer.
Un hook the negative battery cable and turn the key on for a few seconds, then hook the cable back up, then start the truck. It goes back to the original settings. Sometimes the exact same thing, and clears the former codes. If the problem still exists, the light will come right back on.
Most auto parts stores now have decent scanners, for free.
Drive it like its paid for!

Message: Yes, I had both replaced beacuse they were both shot. The shop had a diagnostic unit, and told me both were toast. I replaced them both with NGK brand sensors.
No, not a Cat-back system. I had a new exhaust system built at a shop here in town that bends their own pipe. It's a new exhaust system from the Y-pipe back (Factory Manifilds, Factory Y-pipe, then new from then on), including a new Cat. (the Cat. has been toast for a while, and was preventing me from passing the emissions test)
I can't put the old ones back on as they have been thrown out.
I'm just curious to why I'm still getting O2 Codes. And would like to know what that Code 56 is. I can't find anything about that code.

Message: 56? From the check engine light flashing? flashes 5 times, pause, then 6 times?
My Haynes 97-99 Dakota manual does not list such a flash code. Wish i could help...
