Subject: RT stock tire size?
IP: Logged

Message:
hey guys i got some 17" wheels and was wondering what tire size i should get. i figure since the RT has 17s and is only lowered one inch those tires would probably do (mine is not lowered, maybe in the future). so what are the specs for the tires that come with the RT's (prefferably for a 99 or like dakota as that is the year of mine)? if anyone has any other suggestions for sizes as well please feel from to comment. thanks

Black,
The R/T tire is 255/55/17! You have to know how wide the rim is first off! The R/T rim is a 17x9! If that rim is a 17x8.5-9 you could use the same size! But if the rim is 8 or smaller that tire might be too big! The tire will hang out further than the rim!!! I'm sure some more guys will chime in!

You shoudl be fine with a 255/55/17 then, but it will throw the speedometer off. Check the stock tire sze for what you have on it now, and use the tire and wheel calculator on www.dakota-truck.net to figure out what size 17" tire you need to keep the same diameter so you don't throw the speedo off.

HSKR is right you should be fine to run that tire! It depends on what kind of look you want! I would recommend droppin down to a 245 instead of the 255 so the tire doesnt stick out to far from the rim! But it all depends on your taste! I am personally selling my rims as soon as my R/T 20's get here! Also how far are you trying to get it lowered? If ya plan on putting a big drop on it you might want to think about putting a 45 or 50 series tire on it so you dont rub! It took me a while to figure out what exactly I wanted to put on! Good luck man!

why are you guys going with 245's for the R/T rims? I run Kumho's 255/55R17 on my R/T rims and they are flush with the rim. They don't stick out or anything. I also have a 2/3 hotckis drop on my truck and the tires don't rub at all.

i have a 2/3 drop on my dakota as well with some r/t 17's sitting in the garage. if i want low profiles but want to fill up the fender well gap as much as possible, what tire size does anyone recommend?

i might be lowering it more to a 3/5 drop (with a kit this time LOL) after tax return. does that change the gap in the well to where i would then need a different size tire? if so, what size because i will just wait til then to get those rims on.

I use the 245's up front (less drag) and 275's in the rear (more grip) id run a 285 but i duno if that will fit a 9" rim well

alright,
stock i got 215/55/15. i got these 17x9ers to put on. i want to go low profile as much as possible but i want the tire + rim diameter to equal the same diameter as the stock, or bigger. ya know, less tire more rim, because i am almost satisfied with how it fills the well right now.

and should i wait til i lower it 3/5 to do this? or will it NOT affect lowering it if i put them on now.?

THANKS

Did some checking and the closest your going to get to the stock size in a 17" tire for a 9" rim woudl be a 275/40/17 or 285/40/17. Or at least, those are the sizes I would run, but only if you are going to do a nice drop. If you are only going to drop it 2-3" I would stick closer to the stock R/T size and get a 255/50/17 because there is a bigger range of tires in that size. With the 3/5 drop, I would run the 285/40's personally. At least in the rear, maybe a narrower 255/40/17 in the front. Just make sure you can get the same tire in both sizes. If you want to go with Kumho's, they have the Kumho ECSTA MX in both the 285/40/17 and 255/40/17 and the ECSTA 712 in a 275/40/17 and 255/40/17

Low4c and black99dakota -- Yeah i hear those jokes about the "KUM HO's" a lot :-). Yes the tires are soft but they wear really good. I have the performance setting for my hotckis lowering kit 2/3 and they handle really good. So far i have about 7000 miles on them and you can't really tell that theres too much wear on them. I got them from www.tirerack.com for 79.00 each, it came out to about 380.00 once the shipping charges were added in. We just had it rain here in lancaster and the base where i'm stationed at got flooded pretty good with about 2-6 inches of water. I have to drive on part of one of the old run ways to get to my office and it had about 3-5 inches of water on it so i decided to do some water testing. I hit about 60 MPH going around a turn that has a posted speed limit of 25 and the truck didn't spin out or anything. It didn't hydroplane much unless i hit a puddle that was 4 inches or deeper. But even then it seemed to get traction back really quick. Over all i'm really happy with the tires. Plus they are about the cheapest i've found for my size 255/55R17's.
