Subject: Exhaust on a 4cyl IP: Logged
Message: question, i need to get some nice sounding, deep throaty exhaust system going. i plan on going with some flowmasters, but here is the thing.
one of my co-workers with an ol' tin Nissan p/u, has a 4cyl. with flowmasters on it. now i am hoping it is just the way he split the exhaust so it went out to both sides of the truck (with dual tips for each), that makes it sounds so bad. he said that is pretty much what mine'll sound like if i get flowmasters.
i have heard plenty of flowmasters on hella cars/trucks, but man will it sound that awful if i put that on mine? it sounds like he has an exhaust leak, but he said he didnt. i wont split the exhaust or nothing. itll still run the normal line underneath, just of course, louder and deeper sounding. (....i hope)

Message: its real lame i think, but after the muffler, he welded another pipe on a few inches down the would-be single pipe, and took it across to come out on the left side as well as it did originally on the right. i am thinking that is why it sounds bad.
does your friend have a dakota? when you get yours done, let me know how it sounds and what you used. but on mine, its 2 1/2" stock.

Message: a guy on the 4cyl members board said he put a dynomax super turbo muffler on and it works great. i was thinking of running something like that with a high flow cat as well.

Message: i have a 1990 dodge dakota with a 2.5l 4-banger....its dropped, and everything is either custom, or shaved, and i needed a deep throaty sounding exhaust for when i am out, draggin' some frame, and i made my own exhaust with 2.5" stainless steel tube, it is all mandrel bent, no cat. and i was running a flowmaster 40 series on her....but it sounded ty, lound......but it didnt sound "good" it sounded as if it had a exhaust leak at the header, so i switched mufflers, and put a dynomax super street muffler on it, and now it sounds great.........another thing that i found is that if ya put an exhaust on, w/o the cat, and go 2.5", your gonna need to drill a small hole in the back of the muffler, because your exhaust doesnt get hot enuff to "cook" the moisture out, and you will want to make some kind of an intake on it, and i found that gives them motors alot more power than you would expect...but, it still wasnt enuff for me, so i had my head milled twenty thousandths, put a msd box on it, bosch plus 4 plugs, 8.5mm wires, and now i got juice in it, also, i put a larger throttle body on it too! and its runnin in high 15's, low 14's, but its now a friggin' gas hog, im gettin the same gas mileage as some 4.3l s-10's but i can blow the doors off of them no problem.......so i recomend kinda something of that sort!

Message: Where are you at? here in Cali we have to have a cat. so you got all that more power without a cat?(minus the addatives.) yeah i have heard a lot of good reviews on the dynomax mufflers. so i shouldnt go for the flowmasters? and how does the "series" rating go. the bigger the #, the louder? or what. sorry, i am not exhaust educated.LOL sounds like you really did alot of stuff on your system, right on. so roughly how much did that ring you up for? just so i have an estimate of what to expect if i go to that extent.
and also, why did you keep the standard size on your exhaust? wouldnt you want to go a little bigger?
thanks

Message: hey man,
im in michigan...its a law that we have to have a cat, but it just isnt enforced.....so basically it isnt even a law, and besides that, no one can even climb under my truck to see if i have a cat or not......and the ratings on the flow masters are that the louder the muffler, the lower the rating on them......loudest being "strip" mufflers 20 series, and quietest being the 80 series...which basically sound stock. and, i've spent alot of money on my ride.....but i really have no clue....im a 17 year old kid...and i am an assistant manager at an auto parts store, so i got "the hook up" on prices for that kinda stuff, and i've been building motors and wrenching on cars since i've been about 6-7, so i had the knowledge to do almost all of the mods myself, except "major" stuff, like milling the head and such, but it only cost me i think about $150 to mill my head, because my truck is "sponsored" by my store, too, and even the expensive stuff, i get help on. if ya need any more mopar questions answered, gimmie an e-mail, or post 'em on here!

Message: sorry for the delay in your response,
doing some training at work so i been seriously beat and havent checked the board but ya, so now why did you want to keep the stock size pipe? i think i will do what i can with the cat. but does the dynomax come in "series" as well and if so what kind did you use? do you have a pic of your truck? and how low did you drop it?

Message: i went with a complete new exhaust system......stock size on my truck was about an inch and a half......possibly inch and a quarter, and i upped it to 2.5". and yes, dynomax does come in different "series", but its like the name....not a number, i like the number system a bit better, but i used the dynomax ss (super street) muffler, and the ol' 4-banger sounds a ton more mean than a friends 4.3 s-dime with a flowmaster on it.......

Message: I got a Flomaster exaust single in, dual out and it sounds really throaty on my 2.5L dak. I also took of the stock intake and replaced it with a Honda Intake....I know, don't give me crap, but it sounds good, I took out the sound damper and everything, and not only did it increase hp it also sounds a lot throatier from the front end. Trust me, it works!!!

Message: I've got a 98 Dakota with the 2.5 engine and I had a muffler shop put on a single in dual out flowmaster muffler with 2 1/2" piping from the muffler back and it sounds pretty good. Most people mistake the sound for a beefy V6. A couple people think it's a V8 but, it sounds really good. Not like rice. The guy at the muffler shop I went to said that the way he had to route the piping, he could only do 2 1/2" piping because any bigger and it would interfere with the rearend (differential). I also have a 4/6 DJM lowering kit with a C-Notch though, so I have less clearance around the rearend than stock.
