Subject: Chisel or grind rivets? IP: Logged
Message: I'm planning to do a 2/3" drop on my 99 4x2 Dak.
What's easier, chisel the hanger rivets off or grind the rivet heads off? Anybody done either way? Plus I have to do the blasted squeaky ball joints, which means getting the rivets out.
Any comments? What did you do?
Thanks.

Message: I used a torch to cut the heads of the rivets off, but watch your fuel tank. My buddy and I used some metal to slide in between the tank and the frame to shield the tank from the slag and heat, not to mention a whole lot of prayers. HA! Then once the heads were burned off, we used and air hammer to knock the rest of the rivet out of the frame.

Message: A better way is to drill the rivet head, then break it at the stem...... then again..... thats a huge rivet . I imagin if you take a 1/4 inch drill bit and drill to the center (not all the way threw!!!!) and then chisel the side of the rivet, it should come off pretty easy. I personally wouldn't heat it up at all! Unless yor taking a plasma cutter to it, all your doing is "work hardining" it. And then its that much more dificult to take off.

Message: I would have to say drill out a hole in the center of the rivet and then if available use an air-chisel to take the rest of the head off, then useing a center punch and hammer hit the rivet out of the brackets.

Message: We use a whiz wheel/air chisel at work to take out rivets. Cut an "X" in the head of the rivet and bump it with air chisel. Watch out for flying rivet heads! Wear eye protection. Remember only 2 per customer!

Message: I seen this one kid in my shop get some metal shavings blown in his eye. We had to send him to the sick call right away! I watch the doctor PHYSICALLY remove the shavings out with a pair of tweezers and we are talking military doctors soooo they wernt very nice about it. After that, they di alated his eye and dumped some "glow in the dark" eyedrops and checked his cornia for scratches. Ya..... he cried
The good news is he got a pirite eye patch and a lollypop out of the deal.
And thats just aluminum shavings!!!!!
Eye protection is a good thing

Message: after you get the rivets out, how hard is it to get the bolts in the holes? it looks like there is no room between the frame and the gas tank.
is it easier than it looks? any tips?

Message: Bolting it up between the frame and the gas tank is a pain in the a$$. It's not that hard it's just time consuming because of the lack of space. Be prepared to throw sh*t because you are going to get pissed off. I was able to get an offset flex rachet up in that space and it worked pretty well. Also to line the holes up I put a punch in the hole and was able to move the hanger around to where I wanted it so I could put the bolts in. Give that a try it might work for ya.
