Subject: Shocks with Bags? IP: Logged
Message: I ordered some stuff from AIM a few days ago. I got: 2 Phoenix 2500 Bags, Bolt in brackets, Lines, fittings, etc. As I was on the phone ordering this stuff, the sales rep told me i would need to get the shock relocating kit as well.. I have never heard this mentioned on here before, not anywhere actually. Are some people NOT using this kit? The rep told me that without the kit, that my ride quality would be terrible. Well, anyway the kit was only $88.00, so I did buy it. I'm new to bagging, as this will be my first attempt. Due to money, I only got enough to setup a manual system in the front of my 93 Kota, I'll use my home compressor to inflate them with Bicycle style valves.
Thanks

Message: OK... i know some people hace talked about it on here, i have for one. Are you only bagging the FRONT of your truck? I REALLY want to see how that rides! Normally, with bags all around, with no shocks, it rides like SH**T!!! It can ride smooth as hell with bags and shocks all around, BUT: because you have to relocate the shocks in the front (the kit you bought) YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL ALL THE WAY TO EITHER SIDE! you won't be able to make u-turns. cuz the wheels hit the shocks (or the new mounts).
I have heard that w/ bags all around, and just shocks in the back, it can ride OK (the back shocks are easy to relocate), but i have no experience with that. So, i really dont know how it'd ride with normal suspension in the back and bags in the front. I KNOW SOMEONE ON HERE HAS BAGS JUST IN THE FRONT, but i dont know if he has shocks or not. Hopefully he can help. But i'd suggest just bagging it for now and see how it rides w/o shocks. if u dont like it (and dont like u-turns anyway) have the new shock mounts welded in and put the shocks (drop shocks) in. all they(you) have to do is lift the truck and take off the rims to put in the shocks. Hope this helps.

Message: Wow...that kinda sucks...say good bye to parrellel parking and U-turns. Oh well. I just called and confirmed the turning problem..It shouldn't be to bad, but enough to bug you sometimes. As far as ride quality goes, I'm not too worried. For right now I will have Bags and shocks in the front and Belltech nitrodrops and 4" blocks in the back, untill I can afford to bag the rear-end. A couple months atleast. Anyone have some valves they want to get rid of?
thanks

Message: I am pretty much doing the same setup as you. I am doing the bags in front with relocated shocks, and 4" leafs in the back. What shocks are good for the back? I have heard some people like the Toxic shocks and others hate them. What would be good shocks for my rear with the 4" leafs?

Message: I had a set of toxic's for the back..I didn't like them, but what the helk do I know..lol. They seemed to rough and stiff for me. I like belltech nitrodrops, but I last set I bought for my old Front-end setup blew after 4 weeks or so, but that is most likely because of the poorly cut springs. Duescth Tech makes Greeeaat drop shocks (nitro-slammers), but I have only heard this, never tested them. If I didn't have a brand-new set of Bt's nitrodrops on the back of mine, i would buy a pair. www.sporttruckdirect.com sells them at a decent price. Check them out. They are most likely the best bang for the buck.
Feel free to e-mail with questions on the airbags your installing up front, and let me know how it goes for you. Are you using 2500's or 2600's?
Hope this helps.

Message: ted, i have doetsch tech shocks all around w/ my ?5"? drop. The back rode AWESOME!!!! when i only had it dropped about 4 inches, but then i put an inch bigger block, so it compressed the shocks a little too much. Now i'm not sure if it rides rough cuz of the shocks or cuz i'm about 1/2 inch off the frame. it still rides good on smooth roads, but bumpy roads are kinda sh*tty. But when i had the drop that the shocks were made for, it really rode nice. I've had em for prolly 2 yrs no problems, and i'm pretty sure i got em from sporttruckdirect.com

Message: You absolutely should use shocks in the front. I had Doetsch Tech Nitro Slammers that worked well. And yes, I lost some turning radius with the shock relocation. Next time, I think I'll look into the bags that have the shocks in the middle.

Message: UFDakota,
Sounds good. I think I will probably go with those. I have also heard something about bumpstops in the rear. Do I need different ones? Where would I buy them, and what size?

Message: I'm not sure about the rear bumpstops. I just took the whole bumpstop assembly out; that's why i bottom out real hard, but that's with about 5" drop, and i'm c-notching it soon. with 4 inches, you'll most likey want to take out the stock bumpstops, but i don't know about aftermarket ones.

Message: UFDakota, you bottom out on the frame with a 5" rear drop? I have a quad cab with a 5" rear drop and about 1/2" djm bumpstops and I have never touched the bump stops and ive driven sum pretty rough roads. What size tires are you guys running that you are gonna be able to drop the truck even that much? I have a 3" fron drop on my quad cab with the stock 29" tall tire and i only have about a 1/2" between my tire and the fender flare on the top. I know a 29" tall tire is pretty big but you guy must be running like 25" tall tire to get any drop out of bags. Unless you cut out the fender and move it up.

Message: blackdak20, i might be dropped a little more than 5"; it's 4" blocks with 1 leaf taken out. Plus, I think the quad cabs MIGHT be alittle higher, i have a ext cab Sport. (check the link at the bottom for pics).
I run 235/50/18 tires now, which are only about 44/100 of an inch smaller than stock (my speedo's BARELY off). BUT, i don't have the flares, so i have more tire room. i rub a little in front, but the back hits the frame well before the tires would rub. I have about an inch b/t the axle & frame, & bottom out over speedbumps, potholes, or taking turns fast (i need a rear sway bar.)
do u have pics of yours? check out mine & compare.

Message: Chris...I'll let you know what happens. AIM told me the bags will be here by friday. I'm putting them in friday night and saturday and I'll keep you posted with some pics, and let you know if there is any big modifying to be done. I assume they will be a breeze, as I know how to weld decently. The bag brackets bolt in, but the shock relocators weld in. The entire front end kit cost $401.00 for me.
Jason, Don't know 'bout the control arms, but the rear of my truck rides great now(BT Nitrodrops and 4" blocks), and I assume Bags with Shocks will drive just as good. But I'll let you know when i'm done...proboboly saturday morning sometime.
