Subject: Rear 4 link
IP: Logged

Message:
I've been reading through the suspension section and have not been able to find anyone with a 4 link set up in the rear. I have two questions: Will a 4 link hold up to hard street cornering and will my towing/bed capacity be greatly reduced. I am planning on dropping the rear 4" and the front 3".
One last question, does anyone know how common my dak is. It is one of the lightest I know of, 1997 standard cab, short bed, 5.2L, 2700 lbs. 4x2.

most people who 4-link the rear use baggs. if you just want a 4" drop you will have to use a coil over shock and it will be more money than its worth.
if you want to turn it into a canyon carver, get the hotchkis kit with the sway bars and blisten shocks

there are a lot of people with RC v8's here and on the R/T boards.

brislands is good stuff but i wouldnt recomend their 4 link. Its a bottom bars forward and top bars back. rotates your axle the wrong way. But everything else, brislands is great.

I have a 2000 Dakota R/T CC with a Pete and Jake CHrome parallel 4-link. It handles corners like a dream and with the coilovers, there is no comparison.

Here is my page:

glenn, when u had the bags with the parallel 4-link, i always wondered something: with a panhard bar, does the axle shift over to one side (in your case, to the right) when u air it up? it seems like it would, that you'd have your axle off-center either when it's aired up or aired out, depending on how u set it up.
????does it stay centered at any height??
i'm probably gonna go with parallel when i do mine, and just thought i'd try to find out...peace
By the way, REALLY BADASS TRUCK! the interior and suspension work look awesome!

The rear end would shift but only 1/8" from all the way up to all the way down.

and pappie, is your 4link parallel or triangulated? cuz WHEN i get mine it'll prolly be from jason.
and if it is parallel, (or glenn or anyone else with the PARALEL 4-link) can u hit side-to-side with parallel?? peace

I unfortunatly have a parallel 4 link. I should have put more thought into it and made it a triangle or a 2 link
Ya..... you can hit pretty well if you use like hiem joints or something....

Why don't you just go to a 2 link. Your not forcing 500+ horse to the rear. It should work just fine.

Im putting a pete and jakes parallel 4 link on my quad cab. Its going in this week, going to talk to the guy tommorow. If you want sides dont 2 link it. If you want just front back then 2 link is ok. I think a 2 link is better than a 4 link with the top bars backwards. The 2 link actualy rotates the axle the correct way BUT if you hit sides on it, it twists your frame. Going out of a steep driveway at an angle, twists your frame. So 2 links are ok but not totaly recomended. Later guys

yea, i really just don't want a 2 link; some ppl i know with em dont like em. and i dont want anything lacking in durability. the only reason i wanna go with a parallel 4link is so i can keep my gas tank where it is; like u said blackdak, i don't like reverse 4-links, alot of ppl have em, but it's just not how its supposed to be. If anything, by the time i have $$ to bag it, if i want it triangulated, i'll just get a fuel cell and run it all forward. I'll probably try those new ends suicidedoors.com has. my friend's P&J tri 4 link had heim joints, and they were noisy as hell!
good luck with the install blackdak, let us know how it goes...peace

2 link wont twist the frame.. It just twists wear it mount at.. the bushings..... Your not thinkin I meant a 2 link with a bar WELDED across the bars? Thats just asking for abuse!

I meant a 2 link with a panhard. Then mount the bags in the middle of the 2-link. Way more lift and yes..... side/side like a mofo. Seen it in action.

Then again... he did have 2600 bags in a rear of a s-10

Well my truck isnt going in for another 2 weeks or so. The guy thats doing it is stacked with trucks right now. UFDakota - I was going to put a fuel cell and tri-4 link it but from what i hear, here in cali its illegal to have a fuel cell on a smogged vehicle so i dont want to have to mess with that. The tank is just gonna be raised and a parellel. The pete and jakes 4 links use urathane bushings. I dont know if the older ones used the heim joints. Pappie1- yes i was talkin about a 2 linkd with a panhard. It twists the bars and the frame because it is bolted to the rear axle. Since it is bolted directly to the axle the to bars want to keep parellel and go up and down together. If you hit a side or go sidways out of a driveway one side needs to drop more than the other. To do this a 2 link flexs a bit in the bushings but also flexes the bars and frame. There is no way the link bars and frame wont flex if you hit a side or go out a steep driveway at an angle. A 4 link has 8 piviots to flex at compared to 2 on a 2 link. Not tryin to argue or anything but just trying to show how a 2 link works. 2 links can hit fat sides but not good on a driven truck. You can get as much out of a tri-4 link cuase you can mount the bags up towards the front of the link bar like a 2 link. Late

exactly what i dont like about 2 link. having the bars bolted right on to the axle (like blocks) seems like it'd either twist something or want to pull a wheel off the ground! plus, like u said, u can get that same lift with the bags on 4 link bars.
As far as the fuel cell: here in Florida we don't have any emissions inspections anymore!!! :) so I dont have to worry about that. But, i think i'd still rather go with a parallel, than have to get a fuel cell just for triangulated. and my friend had his P&J 4link was a while back; i don't even see any link kits with heim joints anymore.

I see your point in the mount of the 2 link but ules you get like 20" of lift.... It still shouldn't be a problem too much. Don't get me wrong, Yes it is alot more stressfull on a mount points and yes, a parrellel 4-link is a better solution. but its not the worst install. The ride quality from what I felt isn't sacrificed too much compare to a parrallel 4-link... possibly better do to the bag locations. Just trowing ideas out.
I will admit a tri4 is the best solution out of all. That's the setup I'm coverting to this winter. The whole bag over axle setup is just too bouncy and ride quality just blows. Plus..... you only get @5-7" of lift compare to 6-9 in the front. Like everyone said before...... Big problem is the tank relocation. I'm just gonna make one and mount it in the rearMissouri can care less what I do for the most part soooo I'm really pushing the states buttons to see how far I can go before they impound the truck. Currently its registerd as farm equipment:)
UF.... you'll love the 4 link! NOTHING MOVES AT ALL!!!!!!!! I still dig the whole no wheel hop. You'll defently tell a difference when you stomp on it! Its just crazy!I still every once in a while toss my truck sideways and let the tires loose. Never gets old!

cool, i couldn't even imagine getting NO wheel hop! :)
the one reason i'd like the 2-link is the placement of the bags; sounds like it rides alot better with the bags on the bars, instead of on the axle. i dont even really care much about the extra lift; (i'm doin it to get low!:)
pappie, are u running shocks in the back?? my friend's s10 rode like SH*T with a tri-4 link and no shocks, so i'm definitely using shocks; but i'm use to not having a great ride anyway, so i probably wouldn't mind either way...peace
