Subject: Another few questions about blocks...
IP: Logged

Message:
I just got em on today and I am happy with the appearance, but everytime I take a turn, I hear the back pop sometimes. Should they be torqued a little more? The bolts on the U-joints are around 70lbs/ft right now... Are they safe to drive around with on a normal basis?

What I have: '99 V6 Dak standardcab

Anyone have any experience with putting 2" blocks on this same truck?

It's not 100lbs/ft. That's WAY too much. I went for 80 when I was first putting em on and the block on the right cracked clean in half. Good thing Pep Boys replaced it no questions asked.:D

For the torque, I'd shoot around 65-75. The best way to do it is turn until it gets really hard and then give an extra quarter of a turn. They seem to be holding up good, so I'm not gonna worry about driving it on a daily basis.

Remember: 65-75.

Ok, your truck shouldn't be any different than mine, but I seem to remember torquing mine to around 95, 105, somewhere around there. I read my setting right out of the manual. When I get home tonight I can look for sure, but that sounds a bit short of what it's supposed to be.

I CAN remember that the eye bolts on the leafs are 120 ft/lbs. It's hard as hell to torque those things that much under a dropped truck.

Maybe I was wrong... Eh, maybe it is 100... I have em on 65lbs/ft. each and they seem to be holding good.

They seem ok, but they might backout in a couple thousand miles. I put lock washers on mine just because I am a lock washing machine! I don't know why, but I use them on everything. That or nylocks.

BTW, xplikt, what kind of blocks do you have? The ones I have are $30 2" blocks that come with replacement U-joints from Pep Boys. The package says they're made by American Auto Accessories, Inc. The instructions say 75-85lbs/ft. When I went for 80, CRACK! I think they're made of aluminum... Not sure tho.

Fenris, mine are Hotchkis leafs with steel plates and my roadmaster, which is also like a block is steel.

I've heard many times that you can not use alumninum blocks on Dakotas because they are prone to cracking often.

Basic steel shouldn't be too terribly more expensive than Al.

The service manual says 110 ft/lbs 2WD and 4WD for the U-bolt nuts.

The aluminum blocks will crack! I learned this the hard way, both cracked after a few miles. Only buy steel with Dakotas and torque them down to specs. If you don't they will come loose and start to creek. They will then get processively worse and the creeking will go to clunking(BAD).

Fenris,
Did your two inch blocks lower the truck more than two inches? I put one inch steel blocks on my truck and it lowered the rear 2 inches! At the same time the truck's front end came up 1/4 of an inch. The blocks were installed correctly so I know everything is seated and tightened properly. I carefully measured everything before and after and the numbers don't lie. Anyone else experience something like this?

Eli

Nope... The 2" blocks I got lowered it exactly 2 inches and the back end is almost perfectly even with the front now. I just took a look at em and the passenger-side one cracked.:( I was driving and I hit a curb with the back tire, I think that's what did it. I think I'm just gonna save up and get some Hotchkis 3" leaf springs and some 2" front coils.
