Subject: Best place to get rear end shims? IP: Logged
Message: I lowered my rear end with the Western Chassis 2" shackle. It actually lowered it closer to 3".
Now my rear end pinion and drive shaft do not line up. I'm guessing I need one or two inch degree shims.
Does anyone have any extras for sale?
or
Where is a good place to get them?
Thanks
Bill

Message: Thanks kota62 I'll check out DMJ.
Black Dak. No pics yet. It's been raining forever here in the Houston area. I'll try to take a pic or two anyway and send them to you.
I think I'm gonna leave my front end alone.
I like the way I'm sitting now.
I like the ride. AND
I don't have to worry about rubbing on big bumps.

Message: The drive shaft should be perpindicular (exact 90 degree angle) to the rear end.
There should be virtually no bend in the U Joint where it attaches the drive shaft to the rear end housing.
The drive line (including u joints) should be in a straigth line between the transmission and rear end.
Can someone else better describe this or attach a photo?

Message: You're talking about "pinion angle" which is
the overall angle of the driveshaft relative to
the pinion flange. For example, if the pinion
flange is 4º down and the driveshaft is 3º up,
the overall pinion angle is 1º down, or -1º.
Stock, my quad cab had -.5º pinion angle.
With Western Chassis 2" rear shackle
hangers it now has -4.5º pinion ange.
Negative 4.5º is on the border of being too
much IMHO. I actually tried installing some 2
or 3º shims but found the pin that holds the
leaf springs together wasn't long enough to
work with the shims. It wouldn't engage with
the hole in the spring perch on the rearend.
I'm sure you could get longer pins, but I
decided just to forget about it.
I've got over 5,500 miles on mine (mostly
highway) since I dropped it and haven't had a
problem. My truck is as smooth as silk, no
vibrations at all.>>knocking on wood<<
I got the pinion angle shims at a local
alignment/suspension shop.
If your truck goes down the road smooth, I
honestly wouldn't worry about it. Negative
pinion angle helps prevent wheel hop and
loss of traction.
FWIW I'm probably going to machine a set of
2º 3/4" drop blocks for the rear of my truck
'cause the Western Chassis 2" shackle
hangers only dropped the rear of my Quad
1.5-1.75".
I really don't see how you managed to get 3" of
rear drop using them. Did you measure
before and after? When I installed mine, the
tops of the shakle hangers almost touched
the bottom of the truck bed.
Hope this helps,
Lemmers
