Subject: How to drop 2/2 4.7, CC, any input?
IP: Logged

Well I search and searched... with no luck.

I am thinking of a 2/2 drop and see so many options kits etc... I really like the look of Lemmers but can't locate R/T coils anywhere..

1. IF.. that's IF I cut (not torch) the stock coils, how much do I need to saw off?

2. In the rear, rear shakles? Front shackles? a 2" block? Both? (I really have no clue)

Please don't suggest a full kit.. but for the above, what brand or online site to look to purchase whats needed for the rear... ?

Thanks!
Crash

Hey Crash, thanks for the compliments. Of course I have the full Hotchkis/Bilstein kit on my truck and I highly recommend it.

If you want a 2/2 with similar ride and handling characteristics I would suggest 2" LCA's in front and shackles or blocks in the rear. Shackles look better but are a pain to install.

No problem and thanks for the links.. hours of fun and excitement.. you know.. here I go off topic.

(not directed at Mark.. but just in general) I find it so frustrating sometimes to get a straight answer on these boards. I would think, something either works or doesn't work. I am refering to chips, flashes, cams, intakes, lowering items, etc.. in my case pretty much anything to do with my 4.7.

Someone buys it, tries it and relates the info. What's complicated about that? LOL.. I guess personal preference comes into play.. but still.. for a no-mind like me with little or no local shop availabilty around.. these sites I have to depend on..
That's Life.. I'll get off my lil soapbox now.

BTW.. Mark not sure if I was clear in my email.. I really love the look of your truck!!!.. LOL

Crash, thanks for the compliment. I too was
totally frustrated before I decided what I
wanted to do. I didn’t want my truck to look like
a 4x4, ride like a lumber wagon, bottom out,
scrape, or slam it to the point of looking
Ghetto. I actually use my truck to haul stuff,
pull the boat, etc. (I’ve got the ‘stang to race
and generally abuse) There really is a bunch
of misinformation spread around boards like
this.

I’ve found that Dakotas have a wide variety of
ride heights, that’s why I used RT coils and cut
them to get the drop I wanted. I didn’t want to
cut my factory coils in case I ever decide to put
it back to stock. I was under the impression
that the RT coils would drop my Quad 1” in the
front (originally I was thinking 1/2 drop) but
they didn’t drop the front at all ‘cause of the
higher rate. I ended up cutting 7.5”, (about 1/3
of one full coil), off the RT coils (measured
along the side of the coil) to get exactly a 2”
front drop. It was more than I wanted at first,
but it looks and rides great! I used Western
Chassis 2” rear shackle hangers to drop the
back. It didn’t drop a full 2” though, more like 1
3/4”. I may end up machining a set of pinion
angle correct 1" blocks this winter.

If you can’t find RT coils (got mine on Ebay), I’d
give SportTruckDirect a call. They have 1” front
drop coils for like $90. I’d order a pair of
those, install them, measure and cut them
down if needed to get a 2” drop. I’d much
rather cut a coil spring down than install a 2”
drop front coil and end up with more than a 2”
drop. SportTruckDirect was really helpful
when I ordered my rear shackle hangers. I
actually ordered two pair of shackle hangers,
one for my Quad and a set for my brother's '95
Dakota along with 2" drop spindles for his
truck. All the parts were first rate, fit and work
great IMHO.

A 2” drop arm would work well with your factory
springs, but cost quite a bit more. The up side
is you get new ball joints and a-arm bushings,
the factory ball joints are JUNK and the rubber
A-arm bushings are questionable at best. I
replaced the two upper ball joints on my truck
at 2000 miles, right after I dropped it because
a bunch of rusty water ran out of the left front
joint when I separated the upper a-arm from
the spindle. I could also move the top of the
spindle in and out about 1/16" when it was
assembled.

Email me if you want/need more info.

Hope this helps,
Lemmers (lemmersa@hotmail.com)
