Subject: Coil springs/shocks IP: Logged
Message: I was wanting to lower my dakota 2-3 inches in the front and 3-4 in the rear. I planned on using coil springs in the front, and blocks in the rear. With the use of 2 or 3 inch coil springs, I was told that unless I get performance shocks or something other then stock, that the ride would be of horrible quality. Also, has anyone put the coil springs on themselves? Or have you had to have them put on. A friend of mine said it is very difficult to do yourself, so I was just wondering. Thanks

Message: I did mine myself. It wasn't fun. The leafs are super easy, but the front coils were a bit more of a challenge. It's all in the right tools. You'll need to rent a spring compressor and a pickle fork seperator (or ball joint seperator, or BF hammer). A chain would be nice so you don't kill yourself. It's actually pretty straight forward. The tools I was using were sh1tty rental Checker ones, so it was a PITA for me. Maybe you can get someone who has done a coil replacement to supervise you?

Message: I did mine with a hydraulic jack. You place the jack under the control arm, loosen everything, and let down the jack VERY SLOW. I have had mine apart 5-6 times, all with no problems. It was a little scary the first time, but it's not really hard. You can wrap a chain around it if you'd like. If you feel safer, you can rent all the "proper" tools like xplikt suggested.

Message: After watching a mechanic knock apart balljoints with hammers and using low99dakota's method, I decided to do it the safe(r) way.

Message: use a 3" block with the 3" springs...are you
sure it's a 3" spring? you could always do the
5" shackle hanger and a 1" block. I went that
route. just make sure you buy a c-notch.

Message: If you want lower than a 2/3, Hotchkis isn't the best choice. It's more of a sporty/performance drop. I'd say DJM would be a better choice.

Message: I bought the 3 inch blocks. Got them on and came to find that the U bolts were to small. What do I do now? Buy 4 long bolts and put them throgh and find a piece of metal to put over the top of the axle drill a hole through it and bolt it on? Or what?
