Message: I don't think heating the coils is safe. The Heat modifies the steel to a brittle state and may fail at the most critical time.
I have talked to some guys whom have cut their coils with good success.
Try to raise "lemmers" on this board. He has cut coils on his DAK and has experimented with the amount of drop you get.
good luck

Message: You're going to want to cut those is anything else. Cut the fronts, buy some blocks for the rear and you have a simple cheap drop.

Message: Oh hell yeah you can hurt yourself. I don't want to give you any false impressions, but those springs can seriously hurt you. Take off an arm, go through a wall, break rib cages and skulls. Even with a couple hundred pounds of pressure, they'll do some damage. That's why you must remember to always chain them to the control arm when you work on them. Just put a chain around them and through the control arm and use a chain link to keep it all set.
It's done the same way as most are, but you want the inside spring compressors, not the McPhearson type. Then you'll need either, a large hammer, a pickle fork, or ball joint sperator. There are a couple different methods, some safer than others.

Message: that is a grinder that uses compressed air... i used it to cut my coils. Works really fast. Other suggestions would be open shoe grinder, sawzaw, or bust out the ol' hand saw.
xplikt,
one day when i was at autozone i saw this guy come in the door with a coil spring in his hand and a HUGE bloody gash on his fore head.... D'oh!
probably there to rent some spring compressors.

Message: Oh sh1t, whups. He got lucky though, some of those things store so much KE it's insane. I personally hate all kinds of springs.
Which reminds me, has anyone ever made a flat spring coil for vehicles? Sorta like the springs you see in many H&Ks.

Message: Did a 1"front and 2"rear on my '01 QC V6 and love it. Cut 1/2 coil on front and installed 2" blocks in the rear. I'm running 17's with 60 series tires. I really like that look.

Message: When I first lowered my truck, I cut almost 2 coils off.... hehe I had about half a centimeter before the lower a arm hit the frame. And that was with the bumpstop removed. Looked bad ass, but wasn't the best ride. I now have springs and a-arms. Rides great, and is just about the same hieght it was with the cut springs.
