Subject: Coils and Blocks???

Message:
Hello, I just purchased my 99 dakota sport about a month ago and im ready to get rid of the space between the fenderwell and the tire...i would like to drop 3 inches in the front and 5 in the back...but im on limited funding because im 17 and moms makeing me save for college:S...so I was thinking about buying 3 inch drop coils for the front and 5 inch drop blocks for the rear...I know that its far from the best way to drop but I just figure it will do for now...I was just wanting to know if the 3inch coils in the front are going to totaly mess up my steering and alignment...or if the shop will be able to keep everything straight...thank you for any input

Phillip

You always need to get an alignment after changing your coils. They usually run about $45 to have one done.

A 5" block in the back is probably not the best
idea. Even if you can get them, It'll leave you
like 1" (or less) between the rear axle and
frame.

Tall blocks also increase axle wrap causing
wheel hop. I wouldn't use more than a 1 or 2"
block, especially if you have a V8 and/or a
limited slip differential.

I dropped my Quad 2" in the front w/coils and
have been really happy, although I've noticed a
bit of bumpsteer. Any front drop on a late
model Dakota will increase bump steer. The
more you drop the more bump steer.

If you wanted to go 3 in the front I'd say use a
Western Chassis 2" drop arm and a 1" drop
coil. Western claims their arms actually
decrease the amount of bumpsteer, but I'm
skeptical because bumpsteer is caused by
the outer tie rods being angled up on a
dropped truck and drop arms do nothing to
address this (a drop spindle or longer tie rods
would fix it but are not available for Gen3
Dakotas).

Hope this helps,
Lemmers

I used the hotchkis coils and with the alignment specs, I have less bump steer than when I was stock.

Nice man, for sure get some good shots of your dak and send them to me. That way i can decide for sure if i want the hotchkis kit, or if i should go lower. What size rims and tires do you have on your truck right now? Did the 2/3 drop close up the gap in the fenders very much or do you think it looks to high still and should be lower??
