Subject: A 2/2 or 2/3 Drop.. best way? IP: Logged
Message: Hey all..
Ok.. I have spent hours searching and reading the forums.. only to be not much further ahead that where I began.
I am thinking of maybe doing a 2/2 or 2/3 drop on my 2000 4.7L CC.
How should I go about this? coils up front, if so which brand? where/cost?
Rear?? blocks or shackles? where? cost?
I do have a set up belltech 3" blocks from when I had my old 90 Mazda B2200 lowered.. these any good?
Please help with some ideas.. thanks!

Message: I dropped my 2002 Quad cab 2/2 by cutting a
pair of CC RT front coil springs down in the
front and using Western Chassis rear spring
hangers.
The ride is good, although I'm thinking of
getting some good shocks for the front (like
Koni).
I still might add a 1" block to bring the back
down a total of 3".
Hope this helps,
Lemmers

Message: well, the control arm kit IMHO is the best, I have had both on my 2001 daky. The coils take awhile to settle and you may or may not get the inches you are looking for. The coils also tend to stiffen up your front end abit, possibly to the point of being like a race car.
I have the arms, I think they are awsome. I cannot tell the difference in the ride from stock to lowered (my front is lowered 3"'s, ill send you a pic if you want). The con with the arms is that it increase your turning radii, thus making it more difficult to get the cheeseburgers from your fav drive thru.
As far as droping the back, if your doing a 2" front yull want atleast 4"'s in the back sit make it sit level. my drop was a 3"/4", and I had to end up putting a 1" lowering block in the rear to increase it to 5"'s (had to mod the exhaust..easy fix tho).
make sure you get the proper bump stops, the ones in the kit may or may not be adequate for your setup. I had to get different bump stops than the ones that came with my kit, and not to mention smaller tires.
make sure your getting the right shocks, do not skimp on this or you will hate your ride. I like Doetch Tech, others may differ. The shocks that came with my DJM kit where a bit week and made it ride like a caddi, thus it would bottom out while cornering or hitting a wake on the freeway.
I have the DJM kit, the front arms have a wierd geometry, kinda like upside down triangles. I have not hit or scraped these yet tho. Some say the more expensive kits are better, I believe them. But I have no problems with this DJM kit, as like I said it rides better than stock. It also aligned more close to spec than the stock parts would allow, camber is nice now and bump steer has been greatly improved. I cant even feel bump steer now.
For the back please do it the right way, blocks alone will give you a messed hop in the back. rear shackle hangers at the least. I'm thinking about going with bags...lol thats money tho.
my kit ran around 450 with all the parts, i tried to do it myself but I dont have all the air tools, so i took it in for 250 installed.
so total was about 700, and for the tires I got a good deal, Les Shwab bought my old tires (only had 1000 miles on them) and got some nice z-rated Falkens. so total just under 1-g.
my best mod so far. hope this helps.

Message: Ooo, how do you like those Falkens? The biggest size they make is like a 245/40/17 x 8 or something if I remember right, so it's pretty limited to us. What size do you have?
Ack, you don't need air tools! Some good ole grunt work'll do it.

now they actually measure 9.75 inches on the tread, with my 8" rims.
235mm=9.25, but they are actually pushing 10.

Message: JJ thanks for your input.. and the pics. The deal is .. I don't want totally level, I don't think it looks right on the Dakota. Same as some S10's I see around... it IMHO looks too low in the rear, too low meaning lower than the front depending on amount of fuel in the tank, or even worse if you have anything in the bed. Anyway.. I really like the stock stance of the Dak.. therefore want to go with an even drop.
If this was not my primary driver, then sure.. bag it and plant the frame on the pavement... but I don't show it, nor am I expecting to appear in Truckin' magazine anytime in the near future.. besides.. I live in Canada.. and snow arises as an issue. Ok .. enough justification... hehe
Thanks again JJ..

Message: I have the Azenis, they are really sticky and I have to rotate them alot. But, traction wise they are real good. I think that alot of my ride quality is associated with these tires, and cornering ability is primo. also alot more traction off the line.

| Question for JJ!!! IP: Logged
Message: where did you bought your parts? i've seen your pics, they are great. so you recommend arms instead of springs? im thinking about lowering leaf spring maybe 3" with 2" block because i dont want to do alot of mechanical work and its easy because it is bolt on. what do you think?

Message: Nice! I really want to Azenis, but they don't make them for an 18. I might just say screw it and go with 17s and get them in that. I've had so many people the last few weeks tell me: You need to get some low profile tires and new rims. Thank you captain obvious, I wasn't aware! Next season though, next season..
