Subject: Squeaking after lowered IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone experienced and squeaking noises or thumping noises when going over bumps? I used a JDM 3&5" lowering kit with front springs and rear shackle hangers and i used Toxic lowering shocks all around. Ever since, at the slightes bump my bed squeaks and on big bumps it sounds like its going to fall off. Has anyone heard any noises like this after lowering their Dakota?

Message: welcome to owning a lowered truck. check
that your exhaust isnt making all that rattling
noise.
squeaking is usually associated with
bushings, but you shouldnt have that problem
unless you put on new a-arms.
the knock in the rear usually only happens
when the bed twists while going up a steep
driveway sideways, for example. it is totally
normal.

Message: If it is my exaust that is making some of the noise, and i think it might be, is there any way to quiet it a little. I'm thinking about geting a Gibson catback sideswept exaust, do you think this might decrease some rating noises?
Thanks

Message: how much did you lower it? if it is 5" or lower
in the rear, you should save yourself a lot of
time and hassle, and just dump it with a
turndown before the axle.
I had mine rerouted to go higher over the axle
( real close to the bed), but that just added
more bends etc. after a while, the tip on my
tailpipe got thrashed from going in/out of
steep driveways. so I dumped it before the
axle.

Message: It's been about five months since i've lowered it so i'm used to the ride(bumpstops in the back made a world of a difference). It's the squeaking that mostly bothers me, I think it's from where the shackle hangers meet the frame (metal to metal)but how could i fix this??? The toxic shocks are whats squeaky up front over big dips in the road. DD my tailpipe is flat on the bottom from backing into curbs, i'd hate to thrash a $300 exuast like this. Does anybody have the $75 Edlebrok 10stage gas shocks?

I plan on doing that before my Hotchkis kit gets here in a couple days. It does seem like it would save a lot of time, money and effort to just get a turn down put there. I mean, I can do it myself too. I'll tell you what my findings are on just dumping it after the muffler. Wonder if the fumes'll be any different or in-cab resonance?

Message: xplikt....the interior resonance is super loud, it
shakes your marbles loose, at 65 mph (light
throttle) under 3/4 to heavy throttle, the sound
is still super loud, but the cab doesnt shake
so much. no fume problem for me. its
dumped right after the muffler, before the axle.

Message: D, I wish I read that before this evening. You are very right. I put just a $10 fabbed up pipe a guy at the exhaust shop made up for me. The truck is like a subwoofer now.
It is now SUPER SUPER deep, it's insane! It makes my back kinda tingle and really hits the chest at just above idle. At lighta and such it really turns heads because people do not expect this little truck to have such a clean ultra-deep bass noted exhaust. In the upper RPM range it's real aggressive sounding and not as boomy, but from 800-2000 it's an SPL competition under my truck.
It'll work for now, I guess. Makes me wonder what my truck with a Kenne Bell and JBAs, with the true duals w/ x-pipe turned down would sound like. Wonder if it would sound mean..

Message: I'm in the squeeky club too with my 3/4. My fronts are done with 3" drop coils and the rear is done with hangers. All of my bumpstops were replaced with shorter energy suspension and my shocks were replaced with doeshtech slammers. to put it in words: my ride quality SUCKS. The shocks are TOO STIFF. It rides like a rock and i'm afraid to go over horrid Michigan roads. I've been tempted a couple times to put back the OEMs to salvage some ride quality but hesitate cuz of the "bouncy" effect it produces. Does anyone know the remedy of this? I've heard that tune bilstein's are really stiff, and in this thread i saw that toxics are horrid too. Any recommendations?

Message: ED,
I have the same kit on my '01 (3"springs & 5"Shackle hangers in the back). I replaced only my rear bumpstops because the front will only hit them if i hit a realllly big pothole, and i think that this front end travel is made possible with my Toxic shocks. I always thought the ride was crapy, but after i put the aftermarket bumpstops in the rear, the back has alot more travel in it and doesn't hit the bumpstops too much. To me I think the toxic shocks are pretty decent, but i think that's what's squeaking up front on big bumps.

Message: the toxics are great on mine, I am impressed
for only 29.99 each. if you go with a bilstein or
a edelbrock drop shock, the ride is going to be
much stiffer. look into the doetsch tech, or
belltech shocks. I have heard that beltech
offer a shock that is made for a softer ride.
the squeaking on mine was cured yesturday
with 4 zerk fittings that I have been to lazy to
install for a year!!!!

is a zerk fitting the grease fitting that you use a grease gun on to lube the chasis?
I guess this would only help squeaks caused from lowering a-arm huh??

Never the less, just tap it to fit a threaded. Any machine shop should be able to do that as well
hmm..... Guess I should pop one off my truck just for a looksee this weekend

Message: Hey,
I lowered my 02 RT if you will grease the control arms and not tighten the bolts as tight as you can in the front and in the rear for that matter. The stock bolts have a special lock nut, so you should leave them a little loose. Now, I do not mean falling out. This keeps the bushing from being jammed against the metal and thus allows them to move easier. This solves the squeeking noise. You should have also greased your hanger/shackle bolts that go through the leaf spring with some wheel bearing grease. This solves all squeeks. As for the bumping, the exhuast is one off the problems, but the brake line runs straigt up off the top of the axle and also causes a bumping sound. Another thing, you might check is the emergency cable because it caused some noise on my truck. I have no rattles and no squeeks now.
