Message: help.. tire, airbag suspension prob, please read.. need opinions
I have a question/problem/brainstorm thing with my truck that i need help/opinions on.
I have a 2000 RC Amberfire 3.9 Dakota (www.f-8.com/home/dakota.html)
It has a 3 - 4 drop on it with a set of front airbags on it and 17'' rims. I bought the truck in mint condion from a private owner with only 10,000 miles on it. About 2 weeks ago the drivers side suspension airbag blew out on me so ever since then when i go over a bump or dip in the road the wheel majorly rubs the wheel well. Now the problem is because it was a custom install and the place that apparently did the install for the precvious owner does not have records of what bag was used and was not at all helpful. Basically what it looks like was the truck was lowered a little too much so they raised it up a a little using bags.
Now my options as i see them and i am asking for comments and suggestions on them
1:
Take the airbag out.. track down the replacement and have that installed which requires a lot of time dissasembling and reassembleing it and my not be the best fix because the bag my pop again.
2:
put stock springs in and then lower it back to the desired height using smaller spindles and eliminating the airbags. This sounds like the right way to solve the whole problem and eliminate the bags entirely. (anyone know anyting about what spindle/lowering kit to use for this?)
3:
put new tires on the 17'' rims ( i need new tires anyhow). i currently have 255/55/R17 Dunlops on there now which according to specs are 28.05 inches tall. I was thinking if i put a 255/50/R17 series tire (27'' overall height i believe) on that it would reduce the wheel clearance enough to stop rubbing as much. Now the tire rubs only about maybe about 3/8ths of an inch into the wheel well at the top. would 50 series tires on a 17'' rim look right? what do you think?
Anyhow any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. I live in the San Francisco area of California if anyone knows of some good quality shops that might be helpful.
For pictures of the truck go to www.f-8.com/home/dakota.html
thanks a lot in advance

Message: My first question would be, where is the airbag located? If it is inside the coil spring, is there a shock absorber in the front? If there is no shock, remove both airbags, install ahocks in the factory locations and be done with it. I noticed that you said that the front has a 3" drop. Do you know how this drop was acheived? Is there a coil spring there? If you have a coil spring there, the fron drop of 3" is a little much for the larger tires. Lemme know these fact and I can give you a better idea. By the way, there is no such creature as a drop spindle for a newer Dakota (97up). Options for the front would be 2" control arms or 1,2,3" drop coils or a combination of the two.
