Hey I was wondering if you could help me out a little with some airbag stuff. I decided to put air ride on one of my Dak's. Now I already have a 3/4hp 100%duty compressor and a 6 gallon tank. What I need to decide on now are the bags, valves, etc. Any recomendations? I want the system to be as smooth as possible, not so fast that it's jerky. What port and bag sizes would you recomend? And are there preassembled valve/solenoid setups? I just need 2 axle control, not all 4 bags individually. Thanks in advance

Ben

Up front you probably want the Firestone 2500 and out back the 2600. I have 2500 all the way around. They have a 3/8" port. That should be good enough. For valves, I use the ARO valves. You can get them through grainger, or I can get them for you. It only requires one valve for up and down, where as the Herion or Parker valves usually require 1 valve for up and 1 for down. The wiring is very simple for the valves as well. JUST DON'T BUY ANYTHING FROM AIM OR CHASSIS TECH. There stuff is junk ! ! ! !

Hey, smokin dakota about how much air pressure are you running in your bags up front when driving? I ask this because I have to run about 120 and I heard 100 was the max for any firestone bag. I also have 2500's up front.

I wish somone would have told me that AIM stuff is junk about a year ago. I'm looking to replace the Firestone Airwaves I purchased (twice now) with a set of real bags and brackets up front. Anyone know where to get these for my '95. Oh yeah, since getting screwed over so much from AIM, I've decided not to order anything that doesn't come with at least a one year warranty and not to order from anyone who charges restocking fees.

I don't have any pressure guages, so I don't know what pressure I am running. I find that it rides a little better if I am higher up, rather than being low.

that is odd because it seems opposite in my truck the lower the better unless it draggin. Thanks for the post and the warning about the airbag going off, man that must have scared the sh*t out of you. Do you have Electris or manual switches. If electric do you ever have problems with the selenoid going out? Also I see you have the same problem I do rims won't tuck, have you checked yet how much it cost to narrow the rearend a couple inches. I am just curious about this. There is a guy on Streetsouce Mag that did this to his Dakota and it tucks.

I have Electric ARO valves. I have had problems with the switches sticking. This is because I don't have a water trap and the solenoids get moisture in there. You should be able to tuck with a 7" wide rim. My rim is 8.5" wide so there is no way to tuck unless the rearend is narrowed. Haven't got prices yet, but will soon when I get it bodydropped.

That is good news because I have some 17x7's on order through Billet specialties. I ordered the Twisted Talledega 6. I would have had pictures posted, but Billet Specialties sent the wrong size rim. I couldn't believe the tried to send a 17x8 when I ordered 17x7. If they don't tuck I guess its time to narrow the rearend. How many inches are you going to body drop your truck?

sorry dude, but i have seen dakotas lay'n rail with 17's and the only thing that tucks is the tire tread (if that). unless you go with a real tall tire. and unless you do some serious cutting nothing will tuck in the front.
what backspacing did you get?

that dosent sound like enough BS, they might hang out of the wheel well a bit (not too much) do you have the R/T fender flares?

on a bagged truck with a 7" rim go with 5 1/4" of BS. i have 8" rims with 6 1/4" of BS and if i bagged my truck i would have to trim rear wheel wells where the bed is rolled over into the wells.

you might have to flare the bed sides with that BS and still you will only be tucking about 1/8" of tire tread.

let me know how it looks when you get them on.

yes I have RT fender flares and I rolled the lip on my fender. I really want them to be in the fender well so that if I am riding low and bottom out I don't get wear on the side of my tire. I will probably go bigger later on but right now $ and the truck being my daily driver are my main concerns. I will send you some pictures or tell you where I have them posted. Thanks for the info.

Hey kota on 20's I finally got pictures of my ride up on Streetsourcemag.com. The rims don't tuck but they make my old rims look bad. I guess I will have to narrow the rearend to tuck. Good call on the backspacing I should have talked to you earlier.

lowdak, i couldnt find it, what is the exact link? im courious to see what it looks like.

you could pull the bed sides so it will tuck. it would be a LOT cheaper than narrowing the rearend

kota on 20's go to streetsourcemag.com form the main menu select owner profiles, then select dodge dakotas, and then look for lowdak's profile. I have been toying with that thought to since I have the flares on the fenders anyways.

The front crossmember is on the ground and in the backthe frame is about an inch and a half off the ground. Later on down the road I would like to go to bigger rims but they are so expensive right now. If you ever decide to sell your 20's agian please tell me.

They are 17's. I think its the way the rims are because they are taller than the other 17's I had on the truck. I measured them today and from bead to bead they are 18" buth they have 17" tires. The guy I was going to get the 18's from had already sold them.

HEY WUZUP FELLAS I'M NEW HERE , I FIGURED I WOULD DROP IN AND SEE IF ANYONE COULD ANSWER A QUESTION FOR ME . MY 2000 DAKOTA IS BAGGED I'M USING NITROGEN INSTEAD OF AIR, ANYWAY THATS BESIDE THE POINT . I HEARD YOU COULD USE THE REAREND OF AN OLD 5 LUG DAKOTA BECAUSE ITIS NARROWER AND RIMS COUD TUCK EASIER. I'VE NOT YET C NOTCHED MY REAREND SO IT DOESN'T GO LOW ENOUGH TO TUCK ANYWAY ' ANY HELP WOULD BE GREAT THANX, STEVE

i dont think it will work. i was going to trade my friend rearends (he has a 2000 R/T) and the dealer said in 2000 dodge changed the abs sensor and computor would not read the new data (in your case the old data).

not only that, you would have to find a 5 lug hub for the front.

it would be easier to just buy rims with the proper backspacing, or if you already have rims and they have a wrong backspacing, you can have them rehooped for $100 ea and have them correct the backspacing.
OR you can pull the bed sides so they tuck.

I APPRECIATE THE INPUT. I HAVEN'T GOT RIMS YET BUT I JUST HEARD IT WAS HARD TO FIND RIMS THAT WOULD TUCK EASILY. I WILL PROBABLY RUN 18'S BUT I'M NOT SURE YET. RIGHT NOW I'M RUNNING 95 MODEL CHROME WHEELS PRETTY UGLY BUT LOOK BETTER THAN THE STOCK 5 SPOKE ALLOYS THEY LOOK LIKE HUBCAPS. I HAVE BEEN REARENDED TWICE IN THE LAST 6 MONTHS SO THE INSURANCE COMPANYS HAVE BEEN PRETTY GOOD TO ME . MAYBE NEXT TIME THEY WILL TEAR UP MT UGLY WHEELS.
