I've finally conceded....
I'm ready to admit that I wanna lower my truck (2/3). Does anyone know of a good PROGRESSIVE RATE coil spring w/ a 2" drop?
My definition of progressive, anyway. Sorta soft during the first inch or so of travel, then firmer as it gets more compressed.
I'm not really interested in a stiff ride, but I don't wanna be bottoming out, and I hate the way the stock suspension floats along, making my truck feel like a Buick-with-a-bed.
I've heard that the Hotchkisses are pretty unforgiving.... fine (great, in fact) for enthusiastic cornering, but tend to ride like shi+ on the freeway.
Any ideas?

hey bro, havent seen you in a while.
I dont think anyone has a progressive spring for dakotas yet (or any truck for that matter). I got mine from westerchassis. it firmed it up a little, but its never harsh.

Yeah Eric, that's what I was afraid of. I went through the nightmare of WAY too stiff springs on my last truck, and I definately don't wanna deal with THAT again.
I already changed my shocks to the Pro Comp 9000's, but the result is the exact opposite of what I'm trying to accomplish (they're kinda too rough on the hwy, but there's a lotta travel over speedbumps, etc.).
I'm thinkin' if I went with a-arms, the ride would still be too soft. maybe if you go to SZ this month, you can take me for a spin in your DAK, and I can get an idea of what your springs feel like.
I read somewhere that there's 3" leafs out there, so I'm lookin' into those too.

Here's a silly thought.
If you've ever seen coils on a small, passenger car, they are thin, and widely spaced, obvously designed for a smooth ride. On trucks they are thick and relatively closely spaced for a heavier and stiffer ride. I would think it would be possible to use coils from a smaller truck such as an S-10 or Toyota that may be thinner an would allow for a smoother ride and maybe a bit of a drop at the same time. Anyone heard of this being done before?

well you have to buy the coils and they will cost about the same as a lowered coil build for a dakota so why not get the right ones?
if you did want to put a s10 coil it would ride like crap because its designed for, at the most, a v6. the dakotas are heavier and if you are like broeheem and have a v8 thats even more weight on the coil. it would be too compressed all of the time.
you would also have to make sure the coil was the same diameter so it could fit in the spring pocket, and i dont think it would.
