 Subject: Can't find room for shocks

I am in the middle of bagging my Dakota, the rear went fine with a few minor headaches. Now I am working on the front and I can't find any room for the shocks after the bags are in. I have a few ideas but they are quite extensive. Are aftermarket shocks a lot different in size??
and how much do the shocks help?

I am using the stock control arms, and for right now, I am also using the stock 15" rims and original tires (part of my problem)
Its a 2000 Dakota V6
