Hey. Is it illegal to lower a truck (or any other
vehicle) more than three inches? I read that it
was illegal somewhere on the internet. I'm
not too sure if it is, though. It probably isn't
illegal if you have airbags or hydraulics. I also
read that the reason people do not get
ticketed for it is because that most cops either
don't care or don't know about the law. That
still won't stop me from lowering my truck
more than three inches.

California law states: the distance from the lowest point on the rim to the bottom of the tire must be greater than any other distance (ie lowerest fender point to roadway). this is for your protection of course.

also the center of the headlamps need be 23 " from the pavement.

In Georgia it is illegal to do any alterations that lower/rase more than 2" but it's kinda hard to enforce that law if you dont know the factory height.

It all depends what state your in. Call the state patrol office & they will be happy to answer your questions.

Benzdak, they no longer go by the 2" rule, they now go with the from ground to center of headlight law, something bout it being a federal law or something, least that is what the nice GSP told me about 2 yrs ago when he pulled me over for throwing sparks going thru town.. the 2" law is still on the books but not used as far as I know now, but if ya get pulled over by the wrong P.O then who knows....best check state and local laws if you are that concerned about it Chris.

I dont know about other states but here in michigan we have laws that are pretty liberal. we dont go from the headlight we go to center of frame and your hight goes from what gvrw the truck is and lowering is just kinda if you dont make it look totaly illegal then they wont bother you. i myself had a car in high school that sat 1/4 of an inch off the ground and had a cop tell me it looked good. however when i tore the trans pan off it on a man hole cover it was time to rase it back up. othen then the fact that it was a pain to drive cuz of all the pot holes here in mi.MI did have a no hydrolics law here for a while but was easily beatable a cop would say "your not allowed to have hydrolics on your car" and then i would say so i'm not alowed to have an auto trans and breaks right... they quickly shut up and let me go
