I've chiselled the heads clean off the rivets.

What's the trick for knocking the rivets out?

I've had the surrounding metal red-hot with the torch before laying on the hammer and punch........ they won't budge.

Thanks in advance

Try drilling them out. Be careful not to enlarge the hole.

What's your left foot doing?

What, did you think those rivets would be a loose fit in the holes?

Take those heads off and with a stout drift, then punch them out. Geez.

On second thought: If you can't figure out the rivet thing, maybe you're not yet ready for the ball joint thing. Better let someone do it who knows how.
And the alignment you're gonna need after the ball joint change is not for the home mechanic.

Here's an extract from the balljoint TSB pdf that I have.

6. Using a die grinder equipped with a cut-off wheel, grind an “X” through each of the three upper ball joint rivet heads.

CAUTION: Do not grind into the control arm.

7. Using an air chisel, chisel the three rivet heads off of the upper ball joint.
8. Punch out the rivets using a drift and hammer.
9. Separate the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle with special tool....
