Message: put on bigger tires. 4WD will actually slow you down as the extra weight of the axles and other 4WD componants plus the frictional drag of those componants on your drive train. Traction for wet or slippery surfaces - yes. traction for street racing - no.

Message: Get a selectable locker for the rear end... use it for racing, turn it off normally, or get a fulltime locker if you dont mind a little chirp. Honestly... of all the racers out there, how many actually have 4wd, heck more than half of Baja off road racers dont have 4wd or AWD, reason: your truck is lighter as a 2wd, better handling, better weight ditribution, and a locker is all the traction assist they need.

Message: Converting a 2wd to 4wd is ALOT of work but possible. NO you don't need to buy a new frame but you will need to torch EVERYTHING off the front and grind it clean... Once that is done you'll need a complete donor truck, Put on the new suspension which is more work than you could imagine then get new driveshafts made. I think you can use the same tranny. I am an offroad guy and can tell you it ain't worth it unless you throw a solid axle under it. But that would add lift to it. Another thing is if you have a GEN 2 Dakota forget the locker... You'll blow the diff really quick street racing and driving on pavement in general.
