Subject: drop spindle problem,ugh!

I have a 94 reg. cab dakota and was planning on switching over to 5 lug wheels.I was planning on using 90 model front hubs and then buy drop spindles for the front.When I looked for them the place had 2 different spindles one for 87-90 and 91-96? Factory one's interchange but these don't for some reason. I called their customer service and they couldn't tell me why. So has anybody done this or had this problem come up?

Look into this before you make a decision ... and if your dak is 4x4 then I dont know if I can help because I dont know much about 4x4 front systems... but my logic says this:


Get the 1994 spindles and put them on your truck and the 1990 rotors should fit. I dont believe there is a difference in the 1990 and 1994 rotors except lug patten (someone correct me if im wrong)..

I hope that makes sense but it is 3 AM here so if you need more help, just let me know.

It just through me for a loop that the stock spindles interchange but not the drop spindles. Which in turn made me wonder what was difference was and if it would affect the use of the earlier rotors.

90% certain the difference is in the direction tie rods enter the steering arm.

100% certain the stock ones interchange because stock spindles use a bolt-on steering arm where dropped spindles have the steering arm cast into them. As a side note, the stock Dak spindle is the same as '83-'93 Rams also!

The stock spindles interchange because the steering arm is a separate piece. The newer trucks got a steering arm with a larger hole to accommodate a larger tie rod end. I put early drop spindles on my '96, but had to ream the tie rod hole to fit the later, larger tie rod end. Earlier tie rod ends will not fit a late truck as the inner tie rod end was also changed. Both inner and outer tie rods grew larger on the later trucks. I also put 5-lug rotors and axles on my truck when I lowered it.

As I said, I wasn't 100% certain on the reason for them not matching, Thanks.
Joshua, nice looking truck but I have some Q's.

1) What size tire? Looks smaller than the stock Mustang size (235/55-17?)
2) Any spacers due to high offset of wheels?
3) Any problems fitting over front hub?
4) What year/engine were the rear axles from that you swapped in?

the the dakotas has different tie rod ends i believe for those two models i had both of them and there was a difference.

The other difference between the five lug and six lug rotor is the six lug is slightly thicker. I'm looking at putting a 8 3/4 rear diff out of an A body in mine (which is a bolt in and also locates the axle flanges in the center of the wheel well, rather than twards the outer edge of the wheel well like the stock diff).
