i have a 96 dakota that i want to make it sit totally level. To do this i would have to lower the back and i was just wondering if anyone knows how much of a drop that is and what lowering block kit they would recomend. Another question whats the difference between tapered blocks and regualar?

a tapered block is meant to keep the correct pinion angle for the driveshaft

Here's what I would do:
1. figure out the drop you want.
2. buy what gives that drop.
3. install it.

Good thing I happened along, eh?

I'm 95% possitive a 2" block is considered the "leveling block"

Don't take my word for it, but I'm ALMOST possitive.

The 2" block is commonly referred to as a "leveling block", because that's the amount of rear drop it generally takes to level a pickup, which has extra height built in to the rear for load carrying.

On the 2WD Dakota, any block inserted between spring pack and axle lower the rear end by an amount equal to the thickness of the block.

A wedge block can be used to correct the pinion angle. Using some of that geometry we should have learned in school (and you thought you'd never have a use for it), figure the driveshaft angle change, in degrees, caused by the drop. Then get a wedge block with an angle as close to half of that as you can.
